Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 21 - Foreshadowing

When leaving, the few people backstage at the theater heard the commotion and came out to check. Seeing Bai Qi and Tang Ruo getting into their respective cars, the three of them merely glanced at the mother and child across from them before starting their inspection of each room.

The mother and child across the street evidently had no special abilities and looked as though they had been hungry for several days. The three were not concerned about them at all. Instead, they were momentarily stunned by Bai Qi and Tang Ruo, realizing that there were still people hiding there.

After inspecting every room and finding no one else, the three gathered around a table to eat.

“Hey, that girl from earlier was really delicate and looked quite pretty,” the fire ability user said, eating a pancake and laughing.

Since discovering their abilities, their mental state had been rejuvenated, and they now exuded a more imposing presence.

“I was thinking the same thing. Even by past standards, that girl would be considered top-notch. I haven’t encountered such a person in the South District before; she must have been some kind of young lady from a wealthy family.”

The South District is a nightclub district in H City, where a variety of people gather at night. Occasionally, there are events where a nightclub selects the most beautiful woman, adding to the area’s vibrant atmosphere.

The earth ability user swallowed a pancake, took a sip of mineral water, and said softly, “Do you think the three of us will ever find someone like that? Hey… just thinking about it now feels thrilling.”

As he spoke, he gave a knowing look.

The fire ability user took a few bites of the pancake, patted the earth ability user on the back, and said, “Haven’t you seen how chaotic the streets are now? Third Brother, if you just help someone randomly, they’ll probably treat you like a hero. Hero saves the beauty, and the beauty will naturally come rolling in. Not just one—after a while, you might even be overwhelmed by them… Haha…”

“Stop it, I’m not interested in those. I want the kind of high-class girl from earlier. I’ve never had a lady who’s always served like that before…” He gestured towards the strength-type user. “Mark, that pretty boy with the girl ran off earlier. If he comes back, you should consider grabbing him.”

His “considering” meant he wanted to directly snatch the person.

The three of them used to work as security guards at a large financial securities firm. Originally, there were seven brothers, but when a few of them fell ill with a fever, they became concerned that those with fevers might turn into zombies. However, in the twenty-some years of a law-abiding society, healthy ordinary people couldn’t bring themselves to kill them. So, they left the feverish ones behind and escaped with the supplies.

After the feverish ones woke up three days later and discovered their new abilities, their perspective on life began to change in this society where people were eating each other.

Unwilling to wait passively for their fate, they entered a supermarket they passed by, seeing the scene of people frantically grabbing supplies. Naturally, they didn’t hold back and looted the place. During the looting, they had conflicts with others. Those who had always lived at the bottom of society could now easily overpower those who once considered themselves social elites, and they received frequent pleas for mercy from those who ended up on their knees crying. This experience greatly boosted their confidence and gave them a sense of grandeur.

Moreover, when they left the supermarket with their supplies, the young women who had once looked down on their poverty and were still holed up in the supermarket even hinted at them. If it hadn’t been for Mark’s disagreement, they would have taken a few of those women with them.

In their eyes, the apocalypse was more appealing than the previous society.

Here, they were the elites, the backbone of society.

Mark, the strength-type ability user, quietly ate his pancake without speaking.

Seeing this, the other two exchanged glances. Despite their instinctive fear of the former security team leader in the pre-apocalyptic world, they knew that even though his abilities seemed weaker compared to theirs, his strategic thinking and extensive reading made him invaluable.

Even the current route was planned by Mark, otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to escape H City.

The fire-type ability user took another pancake and persuaded Mark: “Mark, actually, Third Brother is just talking. That couple probably won’t come back. When we see them again, with Third Brother’s skills, that girl might even be happy to throw herself at him.”

Mark finally spoke up: “Stop thinking about pleasure for now. Focus on future matters. Once we finish the supplies, we need to think about what to do next and where to find more resources.”

The earth-type user, although he felt that the fire-type’s persuasion was more aimed at himself than at Mark, agreed with both him and Mark. For now, women could be set aside. Once they had everything they needed, there would be plenty of women available.

“Mark is right. Let’s finish eating, rest for a bit, and then go out to bring back more supplies.”

H City was chaotic. A few days ago, there were still armed police on the streets, but now they were gone, replaced entirely by zombies. As long as one dared to seize the opportunity, there were cars, houses, and money available…

After finishing their breakfast and resting, when they were preparing to go out early the next morning, they suddenly saw a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old boy standing outside the door.

The three were taken aback.

The surprise was that the boy clearly hadn’t just arrived and stood there. However, they hadn’t heard his voice while they were having breakfast.

They exchanged glances, looked at the boy, and Mark asked, “Do you need something?”

The boy had just opened his mouth to ask if he could exchange eight zombie heads for food when he realized he had made a foolish mistake. He had already seen the abilities of these three men on the first floor and knew they wouldn’t trade food for zombie heads. If they needed zombie heads, they could get them themselves. He thought the man might have only said that to make an excuse to help him because he looked pitiful. So he paused and then said, “Can I join your team when you go out to look for supplies?”

The three were momentarily stunned. When they heard he wanted to join their team, the fire-type user couldn’t help but laugh: “You want to join us to hunt zombies?” He laughed while speaking, and eventually burst out laughing: “Don’t joke around. With your small frame, you’d better stay here and live a few more days.”

The boy pressed his lips together and said, “I’m very fast and can protect myself.”

The three of them exchanged another glance, and Mark said, “You have a mother. From what I saw earlier, she probably doesn’t have any abilities.”

The implication was that they couldn’t take his mother with them.

The boy bit his lip and said after a moment, “My mother can stay here for now.”

Seeing the two who still looked displeased, Mark finally nodded in agreement: “We can take you with us. However, the right to distribute the supplies will be ours. You can take one-tenth of what we find.”

One-tenth is still better than nothing. The boy nodded in agreement.
