Chapter 22 - Practice
Bai Qi brought Tang Ruo to a place on the outskirts of the city, not far from the theater. They had to strike a balance: if they ventured too deep into the city, there might be too many zombies for them to handle; if they went too far out into the suburbs, there might not be enough gasoline, which would be very troublesome.
Fortunately, there were many abandoned cars parked along the road. For Bai Qi, who had been surviving the apocalypse for three years, siphoning gasoline was second nature. He quickly filled several buckets, which Tang Ruo stored in her space.
While siphoning gasoline, Bai Qi had Tang Ruo use her psychic powers to sense zombies from a greater distance. They arrived at the front of a science and technology museum.
In the post-apocalyptic world, battling zombies and scavenging for supplies had become routine. It was a matter of course to leave no trace of scavenged goods behind; otherwise, one wouldn’t feel like a true apocalyptic hunter.
In the apocalypse, hunters were those who went out to fight zombies and search for supplies.
The two of them entered the Science and Technology Museum through the main entrance. They encountered only a few zombies along the way, probably because technological items required electricity to function. With food being scarce in the apocalypse, few people paid attention to technological supplies, so naturally, the museum was not crowded.
Every time they encountered zombies, Bai Qi would always have Tang Ruo first use her psychic power to control or disrupt them.
Tang Ruo tried several times and found that she couldn’t fully control the zombies, but she could interfere with them, making them change direction and move away.
Initially, they came one by one, but eventually, there were two at a time, which Tang Ruo could also disrupt.
Additionally, Tang Ruo discovered that her psychic power could create a barrier. This realization came when she was trying to control three zombies simultaneously and failed to manage her psychic power properly.
At that time, Bai Qi was by her side. He had just used ice crystals to shoot into one zombie’s head when he saw two more zombies approaching from Tang Ruo’s left. His abilities were not strong enough to shoot three ice crystals at once, so he had to use all his effort to shoot two and instinctively pulled her around to protect her, shielding her with his own body and turning his back to the two zombies.
It was merely an instinctive reaction to protect her.
But later, contrary to expectations, the zombies didn’t attack. Holding Tang Ruo, Bai Qi saw an invisible barrier separating them from the zombies.
The girl in his arms had a face as pale as snow. Seeing that he was unharmed, she let out a sigh of relief and gave a weak smile, saying, “That’s great, you’re okay.”
Bai Qi quickly dealt with the two zombies, feeling a lingering fear. “I shouldn’t have let you try to control so many.”
He realized that he couldn’t ensure that Tang Ruo could handle so many zombies at once without any mishaps.
He had been too confident, thinking that his three additional years of experience in the apocalypse would make things easier, but now he was nearly putting both their lives at risk.
Bai Qi fell into a gloomy mood.
It wasn’t until Tang Ruo’s abilities were exhausted and she was about to collapse that he snapped back to reality, helping her sit in a corner to rest and allowing her to use crystal cores to replenish her powers.
After Tang Ruo rested for a while and saw that Bai Qi was still wearing a dark expression, she didn’t know how to ease the atmosphere and ended up handing him a bottle of her favorite yogurt.
To be honest, every bottle of yogurt she drank meant one less bottle available. She also knew from Bai Qi that, due to radiation, herbivorous animals would become extinct after the apocalypse, making it unlikely to have yogurt in the future. If it weren’t for Bai Qi’s grim expression, she wouldn’t have been willing to give him the yogurt.
Bai Qi looked at the yogurt in his hand and then at Tang Ruo’s pained expression, and couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.
She thought the best thing in her opinion was also the best in others’ eyes?
Just like children who always think candy is more valuable than money.
“Give me a few more bottles,” Bai Qi said, not being polite, and opened the yogurt with a straw.
Tang Ruo: “…”
Greedy!
Although unwilling, she didn’t truly begrudge it and took out ten bottles from her space, placing them in front of him.
It was Bai Qi’s first time trying this yogurt, and he found the sweet and sour taste quite pleasant. Naturally, he put all ten bottles into his bag. Seeing Tang Ruo still looking at him expectantly, he handed her one bottle and said, “Here.”
Although Tang Ruo liked this brand of yogurt, she was very disciplined and limited herself to one bottle a day. She had a habit of not overeating or overdrinking, which likely developed from her past illness.
Tang Ruo happily took the yogurt, inserted the straw, and drank it.
Every bottle she drank meant one less for him, and she gained an extra bottle!
Seeing Tang Ruo enjoying the yogurt, Bai Qi slowly said, “Let’s practice in pairs from now on. I was too arrogant before.”
Such a mistake should not happen again.
Recalling the incident, Tang Ruo said, “I think I created an air wall earlier.”
Bai Qi remembered and realized that what was behind him must have indeed been a wall.
After using the crystal core and drinking the yogurt, Tang Ruo was fully rejuvenated. Once recovered, they continued to practice their abilities.
This time, Tang Ruo focused on practicing her ability to create a mental wall. She worked on continuously creating a barrier in front of a zombie, and then using her mental power to interfere with its movements.
The zombie was repeatedly tormented by Tang Ruo’s actions. Fortunately, zombies lacked intelligence, otherwise, it might have been extremely frustrating.
Bai Qi, on the other hand, practiced controlling the number of ice crystals he could shoot.
First-level abilities typically allow the use of only one ice crystal at a time. However, in his previous life, Bai Qi had reached level three abilities and was close to level four, so he had a lot of experience with using two or three ice crystals. The fact that he accidentally shot two ice crystals earlier proved that even first-level abilities could handle multiple ice crystals. Thus, he needed to further study their accuracy and strength.
While practicing and fighting, the two of them also picked up any useful high-tech products they found and put them into their space. They collected several electronic dogs, which are excellent for surveillance with their infrared sensors. These electronic dogs are the best tools for guarding in the future, and they are also very convenient to charge—just open the solar panel inside.
Their advertisement is: “A must-have for home and travel.”
For survivors who occasionally need to stay out overnight in the apocalypse, such a night watch tool is indeed very practical.
However, there were too few zombies in the technology museum, and they only managed to kill around forty and gather a dozen or so crystal cores in a day. For the two practicing their abilities, a dozen or so was really not enough to absorb and recover their powers.
After a tiring day, they rested in an office on the top floor of the technology museum.
In the apocalypse, the vast world is no safer than anywhere else—anywhere can be home.
In the future, the national political landscape will be reshuffled, shifting from a focus on financial power to a focus on military power.
After the apocalypse, society will be divided into three classes.
The powerful high-level ability users are at the top, followed by those with authority and leadership, and at the bottom are ordinary people without abilities.
After a hearty dinner, Tang Ruo took out the new-type bathtub from the technology museum and then filled it with hot water from her space.
She had been wanting to take a bath for a long time.
Bai Qi: “…”
Having a large space ability that can stop time is simply enviable.
But thankfully, this ability user is his.
His.
Bai Qi was very pleased with these three words.
