Chapter 24 - Sleeping
The two of them lay on the same bed. With no more high fevers to worry about and no other entertainment options, Tang Ruo said, “Bai Yan, let’s get that tablet out and watch a movie.”
Bai Qi: “…”
Did he dare to bring that out for her?
Bai Qi said, “Let’s go to bed early. We need to gather some supplies tomorrow.”
Since she liked that yogurt so much, they could go to the dairy distributor in the city and take as much as they could.
Tang Ruo pursed her lips, then turned over, facing away from him.
A strand of hair brushed against Bai Qi’s nose, giving a fleeting tickling sensation.
Before long, Tang Ruo fell asleep. She had a bad sleeping posture, often rolling unconsciously to one side until she ended up right next to Bai Qi. Bai Qi, feeling uncomfortable with his arm pinned, gently reached over her head, causing her to naturally roll out of her own covers and into his arms, adjusting herself into a more comfortable position.
Bai Qi: “…”
He finally witnessed her sleeping posture that resembled a washing machine’s drum!
However…
This warmth was uniquely hers…
Then Bai Qi remembered the movie from the tablet…
“Damn it, is it too late now to talk about sleeping separately!”
In the dream, Tang Ruo was extremely busy in the space. She was organizing the warehouse, moving some items that wouldn’t expire and wouldn’t be used for a while outside to free up more space in the warehouse.
She checked the fields outside the warehouse and found that the transplanted fruit trees were growing well in the fields. After just one week, the trees were visibly growing at a remarkable speed.
This meant that the things planted in the space’s fields grew faster than those outside.
In the dream, Bai Qi was also very busy. Traditionally, he was experiencing a dream that every man has, thoroughly feeling the ancient saying “like a spring dream, leaving no trace” and “since then, the king did not attend morning court.”
In the middle of the night, Tang Ruo suddenly sat up. As soon as Tang Ruo sat up, Bai Qi also woke up immediately. After three years in the apocalypse, his heightened alertness from life-and-death experiences was really not something small.
However, thinking about the dream he was just having, Bai Qi painfully closed his eyes again.
Tang Ruo gently said against his face, “Someone is coming from outside, and they’ve brought a wave of zombies.” In the darkness, since they were on the same bed, and Tang Ruo was speaking close to him, her lips were almost touching his, and her breath was on his face. At such a close distance, a slight move forward would bring them even closer.
And that soft, slightly hoarse, and lazy sexy voice after waking up…
Bai Qi felt his blood rush and his pain intensify.
To think that he could still be concerned about this at such a moment.
After Tang Ruo spoke, they heard the sound of the roller door being pulled up outside.
Bai Qi finally pushed aside other thoughts, pulled Tang Ruo up, and cautiously went outside to look down the stairs.
In the darkness, he saw survivors frantically running into the technology museum’s lobby, crying and shouting. It seemed that they were working in teams, with a row of ability users at the back. These ability users were using their dazzling powers to fend off the large shadowy figures behind them.
The shadowy figures at the end were zombies, and among them seemed to be some first-stage evolved zombies. Compared to the initial zombies, first-stage zombies had improved senses and could even jog when they saw “food.”
Many survivors appeared to be injured. It seemed that the smell or sense of blood and fresh meat excited the zombies, making them rush forward recklessly.
“Quick, get inside…” An ability user at the gate urged while using water-based powers to fend off the zombies behind.
“Don’t go too deep; just stay by the door. We don’t know if there are zombies inside yet,” another person shouted, successfully preventing everyone from advancing further.
After a while, everyone entered the museum, and the strength-based ability users quickly lowered the roller door.
The zombies, now blocked, emitted a kind of sound. In the darkness, the moaning of the zombie horde was unsettling and terrifying.
In the dark, Tang Ruo shivered. Although she seemed to have been well-protected by Bai Qi, she had never seen so many zombies together or heard such direct and frightening moans from a horde.
In fact, without Bai Qi, she might not have survived even the first day of the apocalypse.
Tang Ruo’s legs went weak, and she quickly fell into Bai Qi’s warm embrace. Bai Qi had been attentive to her condition, fearing she might be frightened by the scene.
“Don’t be afraid; I’m here,” Bai Qi said softly, guiding her back into the office.
Soon, they would definitely come to inspect the area. The two of them, still in their home clothes, needed to tidy themselves up.
Downstairs, the group checked around the door and then began to explore other areas.
Among them were three fire-based ability users, and many carried flashlights and lamps.
After a thorough search, they found that there were no zombies on the first floor of the technology museum. However, although there were no living zombies, there were plenty of zombie corpses.
The three fire-based ability users exchanged glances and then slowly began to search the upstairs. If the place was secure, they planned to use it as a temporary refuge.
They were all from the same university in H City, including teachers, students, and even dormitory staff. Although it was August and the school was on summer break, some people had already arrived on campus.
In the first three days of the apocalypse, the school noticed minor anomalies and moved everyone into the sports hall. The first three days went well, but after that, many of those who developed fevers at night turned into zombies. Fortunately, the sports hall was large, and there were only a few students. Among them, more than a dozen students who had awakened their abilities managed to protect most of the ordinary people without abilities and escape from the hall. However, with the cafeteria not stocked with enough supplies for the summer break and the number of people being large, resources quickly became insufficient. Fearing that they would starve before rescue arrived, they decided to leave the school on a clear day when it wasn’t raining.
The three fire-based ability users, holding flames, slowly made their way upstairs. When they saw the electronic dogs in the hallway, they suspected that there might be people upstairs. Sure enough, as they turned the corner, they saw a man in black clothing and a girl in a black shirt standing in the corridor, both holding engineering shovels and watching them.
In fact, Bai Qi was also quite young, a promising young talent. When the apocalypse broke out, he was just a 21-year-old university student. However, after three years in the apocalypse, his youthful naivety had been erased, and his demeanor no longer reflected the “youth” that one would typically associate with his age, except for his face.
“Sorry for disturbing you in the middle of the night,” said one of the students, who wore glasses and looked very refined. He seemed a bit surprised when he saw them but spoke politely.
Having just come out of university, they couldn’t easily shake off the manners instilled by their civil education. “My name is Xu Binming, this is Huang Bowen, and this is Li Feiyue. We, along with the people downstairs, are all students from S University. We ran into some unexpected trouble at the school yesterday, so we came here to rest and regroup.”
