Chapter 25 - University Students
Bai Qi looked at them and slowly interrupted, “There are no zombies upstairs. We still need to sleep, so please don’t disturb us further. We will be leaving tomorrow.”
Xu Binming noticed Bai Qi’s apparent impatience and frowned slightly. He suppressed his displeasure and said concisely, “We might stay here for a few days, but we will definitely not disturb your rooms.” He exchanged a few more pleasantries before leading the other two fire-type abilities downstairs.
Seeing them go downstairs, Bai Qi took Tang Ruo back to their room and closed the door.
Downstairs, although Tang Ruo could sense what was happening outside, they had to tidy up the mattress and mosquito net, just in case they suddenly burst in. In the face of the unknown, both had learned to be extra cautious.
Without a bed, Bai Qi let Tang Ruo rest her head on his shoulder. She didn’t hesitate and leaned against him. Then she took out a blanket to cover them both, as the nights in the apocalypse were indeed very cold.
“Are you not planning to sleep?” Tang Ruo asked him.
The door was guarded by two electronic dogs; they would immediately detect anyone who tried to break in.
Bai Qi gently stroked her hair and said, “You should sleep first.” Since he was already disturbed and had lost his sleepiness, he figured it was better to stay awake than to have those kinds of dreams if he fell asleep.
The people downstairs were clearly injured by zombies. Those who were infected would have the virus lying dormant in their bodies, which would take about three days to mutate into zombies. By then, this place would indeed no longer be safe.
In the apocalypse, especially in the early stages, any place that is spacious quickly becomes occupied.
Finding a spot that’s only for two people is quite difficult.
In his past life, Bai Qi had traveled between city bases, teaming up with others to find resources and then trading useless items at various bases for things he needed. This kind of role was known as a hunter in the apocalypse.
But now, he was very tired of this nomadic life.
Meanwhile, the three fire-type ability users returned to the crowd and informed everyone that there were no zombies in the science and technology museum. They confirmed that the upstairs had a man and a woman, but they were both human, which reassured the group.
Naturally, everyone wanted to know more about the people upstairs, including whether they had any abilities.
Xu Binming couldn’t provide a clear answer, but given that the two had managed to clean up the science and technology museum, it was evident they had abilities.
Moreover, their abilities seemed strong, as the two had exuded a clean aura even in the darkness.
After a restless night, the group downstairs did not come up to the second floor again. Bai Qi eventually closed his eyes to rest after much persuasion from Tang Ruo.
As the sun rose in the east, many zombies outside had moved into the shadows to hide.
Some people downstairs had already woken up and were either washing up or having breakfast.
Upstairs, Bai Qi and Tang Ruo had slept next to each other. During the night, Tang Ruo had rolled into Bai Qi’s arms, snuggling up to him and not moving away.
Bai Qi was quite helpless but worried that if he got up and left, the cold would wake Tang Ruo, so he remained half-asleep and endured the discomfort of his bruised eyes until morning.
When the sun came up, the temperature on the ground began to rise. Bai Qi heard noises downstairs, so he gently released Tang Ruo, washed up briefly, and took out the map to plan their route for the day while waiting for Tang Ruo to wake up.
After a while, they heard a knock on the door from downstairs.
Tang Ruo, who had been sleeping, quickly sat up, instinctively gathered the blankets, and said, “Someone’s here.”
Then, they indeed heard knocking on the door.
Bai Qi did not go to open the door but said, “We’ll leave soon. We need to get out of here.”
He had originally intended to practice their skills here, but staying any longer would not only limit their actions but also risk exposing her secret.
Tang Ruo nodded. She had no idea where they were going or what they would do; she was content to follow Bai Qi’s lead.
Bai Qi was pleased with how obedient she was and then opened the door.
“Excuse me, sir.” Xu Binming had intended to address Bai Qi as a classmate, but seeing Bai Qi’s commanding presence at the door, he felt it was more appropriate to use “sir” instead.
“We’ve prepared some breakfast downstairs. You’re welcome to join us; it’s livelier with more people.”
Xu Binming was essentially trying to bring the two of them into their group. Although there were several ability users among them, most were ordinary people. Therefore, gaining the two who had single-handedly cleared out a science and technology museum was an advantageous move for them.
“No need, we have some food of our own. We’ll be leaving soon,” Bai Qi declined directly.
Xu Binming did not seem embarrassed by the rejection and smiled before leaving.
After having breakfast and tidying up their things, the two of them went downstairs.
The many people downstairs had been curious about the man and woman upstairs all night. When they saw Bai Qi and Tang Ruo coming down cleanly and calmly, everyone couldn’t help but look over.
Tang Ruo felt slightly embarrassed.
The scene felt oddly reminiscent of a red carpet-event in a movie.
She had thought the staircase leading to the office was a discreet corner.
Why did it seem so ‘out in the open’ now?
Xu Binming was about to stand up and make introductions when they heard a female student exclaim excitedly, “Bai Yan.”
Everyone turned their heads toward the female student, and soon, other students began to look at Bai Qi with a growing interest upon hearing the name “Bai Yan.”
The group wasn’t made up entirely of S University students; there were also D University students. Since the two schools were close, the principals had gathered all the people they could from both schools together.
The name “Bai Yan” at D University not only represents a person but also signifies honor.
It is said that Bai Yan, who had been an exchange student abroad for two years, returned home and represented the school in a national-level computer programming competition. He effortlessly won first place and was recruited by a top industry company before even graduating. However, Bai Yan reportedly rejected the company’s offer, citing his family’s wealth as the reason—he could start his own company and have some fun.
This capable and handsome second-generation wealthy individual became a hot topic among D University students.
Regardless, Bai Yan undeniably brought more fame to D University, cementing its status as a top engineering school in China.
The mention of “Bai Yan” made many people stop what they were doing and look at Bai Qi.
The female student, even more excited, approached and tried to pull Bai Qi closer. After Bai Qi subtly avoided her, she didn’t seem to notice and continued with enthusiasm, “That’s great! I didn’t expect to see you here.”
