Chapter 26 - Fiancée
Bai Qi searched through his memory but couldn’t recall this person, so he frowned and looked at Tang Ruo beside him.
Tang Ruo:……
Tang Ruo gave him a meaningful glance, and Bai Qi actually understood the message.
The look clearly conveyed: Don’t joke. If you don’t know this person, I certainly don’t. Up to now, I only know you here!
This realization made Bai Qi smile involuntarily.
With a smile on his lips, Bai Qi’s eyes showed a gentle tenderness that was heartwarming.
However, the person he was looking at was not himself.
The female student glanced at him, pursed her lips, and then remembered that many people said Bai Yan had face blindness. So she reminded him of her name: “I’m Su Yuwei. Don’t you remember? We were classmates in high school, and now we’re in the same university and the same department.” Seeing that he still didn’t remember, she seemed a bit disappointed and changed the subject, “Teacher Zhang is over there too. You should go over and say hello. None of us expected to see you here. He’ll definitely be very happy to see you.”
When she mentioned Teacher Zhang, Bai Qi did recall this person. He was his course instructor and might have become his master’s advisor if the apocalypse hadn’t happened.
Bai Qi naturally let Su Yuwei lead him to see Teacher Zhang.
Teacher Zhang, in his forties, was originally a gentle and refined middle-aged man, but recently, due to some recent hardships, he appeared somewhat worn out.
Upon seeing Bai Qi, though he hadn’t taught him many classes, he still recognized him as one of his most outstanding students and was pleasantly surprised: “I asked you to come back during the summer to work on a project, but who knew that before the summer even arrived, the apocalypse struck.”
Bai Qi had completely forgotten about the summer homework from three years ago. Hearing this, he merely chatted casually with Teacher Zhang.
When Teacher Zhang saw the young woman beside Bai Qi, who was fair-skinned and graceful, he naturally asked, “Who is this student?”
Bai Qi naturally responded, “She’s my fiancée.”
As soon as those four words were spoken, Bai Qi felt even more satisfied than with the three “mine” from yesterday.
Indeed, fiancée—someone he could openly be with!
Although a bit surprised by the title, Tang Ruo quickly accepted it since they were indeed engaged. She didn’t show any awkwardness and smiled, calling out to Teacher Zhang along with Bai Qi.
Her obedient demeanor made Bai Qi tighten his grip on her hand with satisfaction.
Teacher Zhang had also seen the news about Bai Qi and Tang Ruo’s engagement, and upon hearing Bai Qi’s words, he remembered and said, “Oh, the second young lady of the Tang family.”
Bai Qi replied, “Yes, Tang Ruo.”
As they chatted, they didn’t notice Su Yuwei’s expression nearby. Although she had seen Bai Qi bringing Tang Ruo downstairs and initially thought they might just be relatives, hearing now that she was his fiancée made her feel more than a bit uncomfortable.
She was Bai Qi’s high school classmate. Although Bai Qi had transferred to their school in his second year, such an outstanding individual was beyond the reach of any girl. During their senior year, she worked tirelessly day and night to get into the same university as him. However, before she could do anything, she saw Bai Qi go abroad for an exchange program, and before she could do anything upon his return, she read in the newspaper that he was getting engaged to the second young lady of the Tang family.
Su Yuwei had also seen their photos in the newspaper, but they were not official photos; they were candid shots of each of them placed together.
While Bai Qi had little in the way of scandalous gossip apart from his looks and family background, Tang Ruo, being the daughter of a wealthy family, attracted more attention.
The newspaper vividly described Tang Ruo as being spoiled and extravagant, spending money recklessly, and even brought up a topic about her having a boyfriend at F University.
If it weren’t for the strict laws in Huaguo that prohibit any sexual activities between minors and impose prison sentences for violations, the newspaper might have depicted Tang Ruo as a high-society girl working in nightclubs.
Originally, Su Yuwei thought that someone as refined and celestial as Bai Qi would never be interested in such a woman. However, she was surprised to see them holding hands and appearing very close.
While chatting with Teacher Zhang, they heard the sound of police cars outside, along with gunshots and broadcast messages. The broadcast was pre-recorded and repeated the same two sentences over and over.
The virus had spread severely, and the military had set up a temporary base near XX University on the outskirts of H City. They welcomed individuals with abilities to join the military directly.
For those who couldn’t make it to the base immediately, they could stay at home. Homes with white strips or clothes hung at the windows were safe, while homes with red strips or clothes indicated the presence of quarantined zombies. The military would rescue people once they had everything under control.
Hearing this announcement, everyone felt a glimmer of hope. In the apocalypse, the most impactful source of hope was the government and its military. One person stood up and loudly suggested, “Let’s go to the temporary base with the military now.”
Many people agreed with his suggestion.
A speed-type ability user quickly grabbed a red and white cloth and went out after observing the reaction of a middle-aged man.
The middle-aged man was the president of D University.
Everyone knew he had gone out to inquire about the situation, and they waited anxiously for the results.
Teacher Zhang also lost interest in chatting with Bai Qi. Firstly, although Bai Qi was his proud student, he hadn’t taught him many classes. Bai Qi had gone abroad for studies as soon as he entered the university, and he had only recently returned before the apocalypse began. Secondly, he had no interest in academic discussions or awards in the current situation.
In the apocalypse, the primary concern was simply surviving.
Bai Qi originally came to greet Teacher Zhang out of respect, but seeing that Teacher Zhang was no longer interested in chatting, he took Tang Ruo to the side door. There, he found the president of D University and greeted him, saying, “President He.”
President He was very pleased to see Bai Qi and expressed his recognition of Tang Ruo as well.
Bai Qi casually introduced her again as his fiancée.
They didn’t engage in much more conversation. Bai Qi quickly got to the point and stated his purpose for finding him.
In appreciation of his alma mater, Bai Qi was willing to donate the two bags of supplies he had to the university as a token of gratitude for the education he received there.
Even if he didn’t use this as an excuse, someone else would. After all, Bai Qi had looked around and hadn’t seen much food among the people. It was likely they had come from D University and hadn’t brought many supplies with them.
