Chapter 70 - What You Fear Will Come
Once they finished their tasks, there was no extra leisure to be had.
As night approached, going out to hunt zombies was no longer safe. Looking at the lively scene in the neighborhood now, it felt bustling. After a month of living with only one team and a horde of zombies, everyone somewhat missed this lively atmosphere.
At first glance, it seemed to resemble the world before the apocalypse.
Thus, they decided to explore the base.
The villa area was neatly organized; although there were people coming and going, it was not too crowded. However, the high-rise area was quite different.
The flower bed where Bai Qi and the others had fought zombies had already transformed into a small plaza.
There were people passing out flyers, as well as those who had laid out cloth on the ground to set up stalls for trading.
It was as lively as an ancient temple fair.
Although humanity had faced the most challenging disaster in its history, the survivors were still filled with hope. As long as there was a glimmer of survival, everyone would do their utmost to stay alive. This was the principle of survival of the fittest.
The makeshift market had all sorts of goods for sale.
But most of it was stuff that the team couldn’t use, such as cosmetics, children’s clothing, dresses, watches, and pre-apocalypse cash…
Others had thought there would be many strange and interesting items, but no one had expected to find such a random assortment. For a moment, they were intrigued to browse around, thinking they might learn what to bring back when they eventually went out to become apocalypse hunters.
A group of people were shopping when they saw military trucks arriving, carrying many people, and stopping at the entrance of the high-rise area. The people getting off the trucks were ordinary civilians, neither ability users nor military personnel.
Previously, when the base was open to the public, many people flocked there for refuge, and it was normal that not everyone could be accommodated in a single day.
After watching for a while, they realized that Liu Bing’s uncle still hadn’t arrived. They comforted him for a bit before heading back to the main road and going home.
Dinner was still at Hu Haotian’s place, and of course, Hu father and Yang Li were also present.
During the day, they needed to stay in that villa. Yang Li was assigned to work in the logistics team at the base, while Hu father was involved in one meeting after another, so they couldn’t join the team.
At the dinner table, Hu father shared some specific information about the base’s plans for the next day.
The first item was the construction of the walls.
“The higher-ups have decided to start work tomorrow. The plans and architectural blueprints for the base have all been rushed and completed overnight.”
Everyone had already prepared for this and had no objections.
“Also, a dedicated team has been established to regulate the base’s safety and order. In simple terms, it’s equivalent to the police before the apocalypse, but…” Hu’s father sighed, “the current candidate for team leader is Zhou Shuguang.”
Everyone was a bit taken aback.
It felt like being a vendor on the street, only to find out that the person in charge of the area was the city management officer.
Hu Haotian said, “It’s like what you fear most comes true.”
Pan Dawei added, “Having money and a house is just this kind of trouble—worrying about being targeted by scoundrels.”
Barefoot people aren’t afraid of those in shoes, but lately, the members of the convoy have become the upper class in leather shoes.
After discussing this topic the previous evening, trouble indeed came the next day.
At that time, the ability users in the convoy had already left their respective villas and reported to the base’s task area.
Bai Qi and Tang Ruo, one with ice abilities and the other with water abilities, naturally went to the water supply department.
They certainly did not plan to bring out Tang Ruo’s spatial water for collective use. If someone were to discover the anomaly of her providing water, it might backfire and bring trouble instead of doing a good deed.
Fortunately, they had collected a lot of bottled water from the Shimao supermarket before, and after discovering the utility of the spatial water, they had set the supermarket water aside. Now, they could use their abilities to produce water for the base, which could last them for a while.
Yesterday, the members of the convoy had also discussed that after working at the base for about half a month to improve the basic infrastructure, they planned to “resign” and head out to become hunters.
They weren’t professionals; they were just temporarily filling in.
The work for the two of them was very simple; they just had to pour water and ice into the buckets in front of them.
Looking at the other person beside them who also had this ability, it seemed they only needed to submit one bucket of water and one bucket of ice each. So, the two decided not to stand out and would also submit just one bucket of water and one bucket of ice.
Thus, during their leisure time, they could chat about life, and Bai Qi could playfully touch her.
It was simply too wonderful.
Compared to their simplicity, Hu Haotian and his two companions had a bit more trouble.
After all, the area that the base needed to develop was vast, and the three really couldn’t understand the so-called construction blueprints drawn up by the professionals!
“I never imagined that one day I would come to a construction site to do manual labor,” Hu Haotian said, sitting on a dirt wall, twisting off the cap of his water bottle during a break.
“Team Hu, take off your jacket and hang a towel over it; it should feel more appropriate,” Luo Ziqiang said while drinking water beside him.
Yu Wanli remarked, “The ancients didn’t deceive me; when you’re out in the world, you really do have to pay the price. I thought I would be sitting in an office for my entire life.”
Compared to their previous status as social elites, the three now felt like migrant workers sitting on the wall.
Hu Haotian took a couple of sips and then put down his water bottle. “I should have brought the water that Xioa Tang gave me; this is really hard to drink.”
The base also provided water for the ability users at work, and all meals were covered.
“I wonder how that little couple is doing over there,” Luo Ziqiang said, also setting down his water bottle.
Recently, they had been spoiled by Tang Ruo’s water, and the disinfected drinking water provided by the base now tasted to them like mouthwash.
Yu Wanli pulled out a glass water bottle from his bag. “Xioa Bai’s skill of showing affection anytime and anywhere—are you guys really not missing it?”
Both of them immediately shook their heads, indicating they didn’t want to see it!
“Damn, Old Yu, you’re so shameless! You even brought your own tea; why didn’t you tell us sooner?” Hu Haotian quickly walked over and snatched it away. “Give me some.”
Luo Ziqiang wasn’t going to fall behind either. “Leave some for me too!”
“You two shouldn’t be so excessive. You can’t drag down your teammates just because you’re foolish and didn’t bring water… Ah… it spilled, it spilled!”
While the three were fooling around, they saw Liu Bing running over like the wind. “Team Hu, Team Hu…”
Hu Haotian’s heart skipped a beat as he grabbed Liu Bing. “What’s wrong?”
“Our house… someone came and said they want to tear down the solar panels!”
The three of them cursed under their breath.
Hu Haotian said, “Go to the water resource center and bring Xioa Bai over. Hurry up…”
Liu Bing didn’t dare to slack off, nodding repeatedly as he ran off again.
