Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 20: Dragon-Shaped Tattoo

Li Xueying glared at Su Ling with an iron face, but she dared not speak out in anger.

The few of them huddled together in a space of less than ten square meters, hardly daring to breathe.

Su Ling had been silently chanting the reinforcement, and she had lost count of how many times she had failed. Finally, she managed to reinforce the room to forty percent.

Combined with the relatively thick kitchen walls, made of stacked tiles, they should hold up for a while.

However, the zombies outside had no intention of letting them stay in peace. They incessantly pounded on the solid wooden kitchen door, making banging sounds that were nerve-wracking.

"Sister Su Ling, where did Mr. Sheng go? Why hasn't he come back yet? The zombies won't get in, will they?"

Geng Hao leaned on his crutches, his legs trembling uncontrollably.

"He knows that zombies come out at night; he should be back soon."

Su Ling comforted in a soft voice. After all, Gu Kai Xuan was still in their hands; Sheng Hongye wouldn't abandon the child.

Liu Yu shook his head. "Mr. Sheng might have encountered some trouble. He probably won't come today."

Su Ling agreed with him. The outside was likely filled with zombies, and unless Sheng Hongye had a military force, going out at night would be suicide.

After hearing Liu Yu's analysis, Gu Kai Xuan pouted, and tears welled up in his eyes again.

He had always admired his uncle and felt that his uncle was capable of anything. Now, his uncle wouldn't come back, and there were monsters outside. He couldn't help but look tearfully at Su Ling.

"Auntie, are we going to die?"

"We won't. We'll be fine."

Su Ling said and closed her eyes. The door was made of solid wood and was easily breakable.

To protect this entrance, she had been constantly reinforcing the wooden door, but the failure rate was too high, and the rate of reinforcement couldn't keep up with the rate of breaking through.

At this moment, the defense of the door had dropped to zero.

With a crisp sound, the wood grain cracked open.

Su Ling broke into a sweat again and frantically shouted, "Reinforce, reinforce, reinforce..."

The sounds of failure kept ringing in her mind, but then a pleasant prompt sounded.

"A character with an eighty percent soul compatibility with the host has appeared. Item reinforcement successful."

Then, a miracle happened again—the crack in the wooden door disappeared in front of everyone's eyes. The door was intact as if it had just been made, even more splendid than before.

Geng Hao couldn't help but exclaim, "The... the crack in the door disappeared. Am I seeing things?"

Liu Yu also took off his glasses and leaned in to take a look at the door.

"A miracle, no, it's a miracle."

Excitement appeared in Su Ling's eyes, and she hugged Gu Kai Xuan. "Good boy, don't be afraid. Your uncle is back."

Gu Kai Xuan widened his black grape-like eyes in excitement and clenched his little fists. "Really?"

"Yes."

Su Ling nodded.

Then, they heard a loud crash, as if someone had broken through the glass and entered the room. Following that, they heard someone speaking.

"Mr. Sheng, is he really here?"

"The car is here; he must be here."

A deep, magnetic voice echoed in the hall, causing Gu Kai Xuan to shout excitedly at the door, "Uncle, I'm here."

Footsteps resounded, banging sounds were endless, and five minutes later, there was a knock on the door.

"It's me, Kai Xuan!"

"Uncle, uncle!"

Gu Kai Xuan ran to the door and opened it. He immediately rushed into Sheng Hongye's embrace.

Li Xueying immediately ran over, asking with a hint of grievance, "Brother Ye, where did you go? Why did you come back only now?"

Su Ling and the others also came out of the kitchen and saw a dozen burly men standing side by side in the shadows. They all wore almost identical camouflage military pants and black T-shirts, with cold and ruthless expressions.

Could they be soldiers?

Lizhou was a first-tier city in China, and there were indeed military forces stationed there.

While sizing up the group, Su Ling saw Sheng Hongye turn his face toward her.

"Miss Su Ling, are you okay?"

Su Ling slowed down her almost numb brain and let out a sigh. "I'm fine, luckily this kitchen is still intact."

Sheng Hongye nodded, then looked inside. "Since you're all fine, let's move elsewhere. It's not safe here. If there's another earthquake, this place will collapse. Let's get on the car before a large group of zombies arrives."

"Okay."

Su Ling immediately supported Geng Hao, and Liu Yu supported the other side. The three of them got back into Su Ling's Passat. However, as soon as they hit the road, they encountered a large group of zombies.

Seeing the densely packed zombies ahead, Su Ling's scalp tingled.

Liu Yu couldn't help cursing, "Damn, why are there so many?"

Geng Hao followed, "Damn, it's so scary. Su Ling, what should we do?"

Su Ling wanted to just drive through them but was afraid of getting stuck in the middle of the zombies.

Even though her car had one hundred percent defense, it couldn't withstand so many zombies. Once the defense dropped to zero, her car would be no different from an ordinary one.

Su Ling considered the crazy idea of just charging through, but she suppressed it.

At this moment, Sheng Hongye's car had turned around.

"Let's take a detour."

Su Ling signaled to him, immediately turned the steering wheel, and the other two Land Rovers followed suit. After a moment, they shook off the zombies.

Su Ling breathed a sigh of relief and followed Sheng Hongye in a circle. Half an hour later, Sheng Hongye finally stopped in front of a building about three stories high.

A dozen people had jumped out of Sheng Hongye's car earlier and whistled three long and two short sounds at the iron gate.

With a creaking sound, the iron gate was pulled open. Su Ling drove in and found that the place was shaped like the word "口". Houses surrounded it, and in the middle was a courtyard that could hold more than twenty cars.

The glass of the rooms had all been nailed shut with iron plates, looking very sturdy. In the courtyard, there were more than a dozen cars, with almost all types of vehicles, including two ambulances and fire engines.

At this moment, the door on the ground floor of the building opened.

Another dozen people wearing camouflage uniforms walked out. They walked up to Sheng Hongye in single file and bowed to him, saying, "Mr. Sheng."

Sheng Hongye waved at the young man on the left.

"Take them to rest first. We'll talk about other things later."

"Brother, what is this place, and can we take a shower here?"

Li Xueying's princess syndrome acted up again.

Sheng Hongye seemed not to have heard and walked to the other side.

To be honest, Su Ling was very impressed with Sheng Hongye. If she had someone like him by her side, she would probably have gone crazy long ago.

Lost in thought, they were led to a separate room.

"There are instant noodles and ham sausages in the refrigerator, and there's hot water in the bathroom. If you need anything, you can press that button to call me."

The man turned on the lights, and only then did Su Ling realize that when she said 'man' earlier, it seemed too vague. The person in front of her was at most twenty-three or twenty-four years old, with thick eyebrows and big eyes, a good-looking young man.

She couldn't help but smile at him. "Thank you."

The young man shyly scratched his head. "You're welcome."

In the moment when he raised his hand, Su Ling suddenly saw a tattoo on his right wrist that looked like a dragon shape. She couldn't help but grab his arm excitedly.

"You are…"
