Chapter 25: Animals Are Starting to Mutate

Su Ling woke up, and it was already dark outside.

She felt a piercing headache, and her body had no strength at all.

She used to think that this system was amazing; there were no restrictions on usage, and there were no side effects. But today, she realized how terrifying the aftermath of extensive reinforcement could be.

Now, she couldn't even move her little finger, as if all the strength in her body had been drained.

"You're awake?" a deep voice sounded from behind, and Su Ling struggled to turn her body.

A sharply defined handsome face came into view, and it was Sheng Hongye.

"Mr. Sheng."

Su Ling opened her mouth to speak, but her voice was as feeble as a kitten, lacking strength.

"Do you want some water?" Sheng Hongye reached out and helped Su Ling up.

Su Ling was too weak to resist, so she could only lean on his shoulder.

In her entire life, apart from her patients, she had never been this close to any man. Her face turned red in an instant.

"I'm not thirsty, thank you. Just let me lie down for a while."

To avoid being misunderstood, she used all her remaining strength to push Sheng Hongye away, but she ended up falling back onto the bed.

Sheng Hongye frowned. This woman was too stubborn.

He asked, "Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"

"Maybe I caught a cold from the rain."

Su Ling forced a smile and closed her eyes again.

Sheng Hongye reached out and touched her forehead; her temperature was normal, and she didn't seem to be sick. Even if she was sick, it wouldn't have recovered this quickly. He recalled how Su Ling had held his hand with closed eyes, and his expression deepened.

"Then rest for a while. I'll go outside and check."

Hearing the banging sounds, Su Ling knew that the zombies must be attacking the base again. She nodded vigorously in agreement.

Shortly after the door closed, Su Ling drifted back to sleep.

In a half-awake state, she felt someone entering the room and seemed to be searching for something. She wanted to open her eyes and see, but her eyelids were as heavy as lead, and she couldn't lift them no matter how hard she tried...

She slept until noon the next day and felt a little better. Then, she suddenly felt an inexplicable hunger.

Seeing bread and canned food on the coffee table, she immediately wolfed them down.

As she was eating, the door opened, and Gu Kai Xuan rushed in from outside.

"Auntie, you're awake!"

Gu Kai Xuan, with his short legs, ran up to Su Ling.

Su Ling rubbed his little head and asked with a smile, "Do you want to eat something?"

Gu Kai Xuan shook his head. "I'm not hungry. I already ate."

Then, he said mysteriously, "Uncle is very worried about you. He came to see you several times."

Su Ling's face blushed slightly, and she smiled, "Do you know what it means to be worried?"

Gu Kai Xuan nodded vigorously. "Of course, every time Uncle comes to see you, he never stops frowning. Uncle Lin Ye said that he has never treated anyone like this before."

Su Ling rolled her eyes. It seemed that doctors had a certain status in this team.

"Where is he?"

Gu Kai Xuan smiled and said, "Uncle and a few other uncles went out. They said they were looking for supplies. Auntie, can you take me outside to play? I just picked up a long-legged little fish in the water."

"Do fish have long legs?"

Su Ling asked casually, but she was actually thinking about the supplies in the base. On the day she arrived, she saw a warehouse on the first floor with about a hundred square meters of space, filled with canned food, bread, instant noodles, and other food items. However, due to the heavy rain, the entire area was flooded to half of the second floor, rendering those supplies likely inedible.

Some supermarkets in low-lying areas probably won't be spared either. Sigh, it's indeed the end of the world. I used to think we could hold on for a while, but it seems survival has already begun.

"Of course, we do. Don't believe me? Take a look."

Gu Kai Xuan proudly took out a small bottle from his pocket. Seeing the contents inside, Su Ling couldn't help but shudder with goosebumps.

Inside was a tiny fish about the size of a finger joint. Judging by its species, it should be a carp, but what set it apart was that this carp had grown two legs, much like a duck's feet, making it both eerie and bizarre.

Su Ling couldn't help but take a step back. "Where did you find this?"

Gu Kai Xuan pointed outside. "Just at the entrance. Auntie, do you want to go and see?"

"Okay, let's go and take a look."

Su Ling suddenly lost her appetite.

If her guess was correct, some animals were already undergoing mutations. It had only been a month, and she couldn't imagine what strange things would emerge in the future. The thought of the nauseating and terrifying alien creatures from Western movies made her feel queasy.

Lost in her thoughts, the two of them had already reached downstairs, and the water had receded.

The sun outside was scorching, and the orange and blue colors in the sky were becoming more distinct and eerie. Su Ling looked up and felt a stabbing pain in her eyes; it seemed like the ultraviolet rays had become even stronger compared to a few days ago.

Gu Kai Xuan had already rushed outside without a care, but Su Ling quickly pulled him back.

"Wait here, let me check if there's an umbrella. The sunlight is too dangerous."

Gu Kai Xuan nodded, obediently standing at the doorway. Lin Ye happened to come down and found an umbrella for Su Ling. He then said, "It seems that the ultraviolet rays after the rain are even stronger now. Miss Su, it's better not to stay outside."

Su Ling nodded and suddenly asked, "Lin Ye, have you been to Donghai?"

Lin Ye was slightly surprised but shook his head immediately. "No, why?"

"Nothing."

Su Ling looked at Lin Ye. He had a tall and slender figure, not as burly as the man who saved her.

Helplessly shaking her head, she asked, "Among you all, does anyone else have this dragon-shaped tattoo?"

"No, I'm the only one with it. Does Miss Su like tattoos?" Lin Ye asked with a smile.

Su Ling smiled and said, "I just like this pattern. Where else can I find people with this kind of tattoo?"

"Well..." Lin Ye shook his head. "I'm sorry, but I can't tell you."

Su Ling guessed that this kind of tattoo might represent a certain group or organization. Since Lin Ye didn't want to say, asking further would be in vain. She could only look for another opportunity.

Gu Kai Xuan was getting impatient and shouted to Su Ling, "Auntie, hurry up! There are shrimp over there, and they have wings!"

Su Ling quickly grabbed the umbrella and followed Gu Kai Xuan to a puddle.

Sure enough, there lay a transparent small shrimp with two thin and narrow wings growing on its back.

Lin Ye also walked over, curiously catching the small shrimp in his hand.

"Heh, this is indeed rare. This thing actually grew wings?"

"Let me see."

Liu Yu somehow found an umbrella and ran over too.

Seeing this small shrimp, his pupils noticeably contracted.

"Shrimps actually grew wings? Could it be that the prophecies are true?"
