Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 5: The Terrifying Surgery

Sheng Hongye stepped back, holding the child in his arms, while Su Ling felt her scalp tingle with fear.

The pain from her previous life was still vivid in her memory. Seeing so many zombies now, she felt aches all over her body and immediately turned to run out of the door.

"Get in the car first," Sheng Hongye said urgently.

With no other option, Sheng Hongye had to carry the child and retreat into the car.

The zombies were fast. As soon as the two closed the car door, the zombies were already at the front of the vehicle.

Seeing the windshield covered with zombies, Su Ling's back broke into a cold sweat.

"It seems we can't get into the hospital," she said.

"Shit!" Sheng Hongye cursed, glancing at Gu Kai Xuan.

"Kai Xuan, how are you doing now? Can you still bear it?"

With wide-open eyes, Gu Kai Xuan seemed to be drawn to the zombies. When he heard Sheng Hongye's question, his little face wrinkled.

"It hurts, it still hurts."

Looking at the obvious swelling on Gu Kai Xuan's abdomen, Su Ling's forehead was already covered in sweat. Continuing like this would be extremely dangerous.

Though there were surgical knives in the car, the lighting was insufficient, making it impossible to perform surgery.

At this moment, the zombies had climbed onto the car roof and were banging wildly on it.

Despite Su Ling's sturdy car, the banging noises were disturbing.

"Mr. Sheng, what should we do?" she asked.

Sheng Hongye squinted his eyes, his gaze deep.

He looked at his nephew holding his stomach and gritted his teeth. "I'll drive. We'll charge in. Su Miss, please take care of Kai Xuan for me."

"Alright."

With no time for hesitation, Su Ling adjusted the seat and quickly switched positions with Sheng Hongye.

The engine roared piercingly as the car knocked the zombies away, but the loud noise also attracted more of them. Seeing a constant stream of patients and medical staff coming out of the hospital entrance, Su Ling was anxious.

Sheng Hongye kept reversing the car outside the hospital, constantly creating loud noises.

Soon, Su Ling understood his plan. He wanted to lure all the zombies out with the car's noise, but she had no idea how long Gu Kai Xuan could hold on.

She quickly took out a painkiller and broke off half a tablet, feeding it to the child.

"Hang on a little longer; it'll be okay soon," Sheng Hongye said.

About five minutes later, there was already a long line of zombies outside the door. Seeing that no new zombies were coming out, Sheng Hongye immediately stopped the car.

"Go inside."

"Okay," Su Ling replied, closely following behind him.

Passing by the reception desk, Sheng Hongye picked up a chair to use as a weapon.

The two of them went upstairs, and Su Ling suddenly stopped.

Most of the layout in Tianfu Hospital was the same. If she guessed correctly, there should be an operating room on the second floor.

"Mr. Sheng, there might be an operating room on the right side," she said, adding, "I am a surgeon from Tianfu Hospital in Donghai."

Sheng Hongye nodded and ran towards the right.

Gu Kai Xuan was crying out in pain.

"Auntie, it hurts a lot. Am I going to die?"

"You won't," Su Ling comforted him while running down the corridor.

In the distance, she saw a blinking red light, indeed signaling an operating room.

Sheng Hongye forcefully opened the door to the operating room, and a doctor in a green sterile suit rushed at him and scratched him.

A cold light flashed in Sheng Hongye's eyes, and he quickly grabbed the back of the doctor's neck, snapping it with a crisp sound.

Su Ling was surprised, her mouth wide open. She had known Sheng Hongye was skilled, but she didn't expect him to react so quickly.

In the midst of her thoughts, Sheng Hongye swiftly entered the operating room.

"Wait at the entrance; I'll check inside," he said.

Su Ling followed him inside since the child couldn't wait any longer.

She locked the door with a click and brought Gu Kai Xuan to the outermost room of the operating room. With maximum speed, she took out a sterile suit and a disposable surgical knife, and then administered an anesthetic to Gu Kai Xuan.

"Don't be scared. You'll just take a little nap, and you'll be fine. Be good, Kai Xuan. Auntie loves you the most."

While comforting Gu Kai Xuan, Su Ling injected him with intravenous anesthesia. Since the child was too young, she didn't dare to use local anesthesia, fearing he might move around.

Before she finished speaking, Gu Kai Xuan fell into a drowsy state.

Su Ling turned on the shadowless light and began the surgery.

Suddenly, a loud bang came from behind, as if something had smashed into something else.

However, Su Ling didn't dare to look back. Although appendectomy wasn't a major surgery, the patient was just a young child, so there was no room for error.

At this moment, a low voice sounded in her ear.

"Mind your work. I'll deal with the rest."

It was Sheng Hongye's voice.

His deep and steady voice calmed Su Ling considerably.

"Understood."

She replied and focused her attention on Gu Kai Xuan's surgery.

Another round of banging and colliding noises came from behind, but it soon quieted down.

Su Ling's work continued methodically. She first stopped the bleeding, then removed the appendix, and finally sutured the wound. For an experienced surgeon like Su Ling, this minor surgery was nothing to be nervous about.

Twenty minutes later, she successfully completed the surgery.

"We need to find a quiet room. The child will need antibiotics. We may have to stay here for a few days," Su Ling said, without looking back. She knew Sheng Hongye was standing behind her.

As expected, the magnetic voice sounded again.

"First find a ward. Tell me what medicines are needed, and I'll take care of it."

Su Ling nodded and pushed a hospital bed over, indicating for Sheng Hongye to lift the sterile sheet and gently place Gu Kai Xuan on the bed.

At this moment, the child was still unconscious, with a pale face, looking unexpectedly fragile and pitiful.

Su Ling couldn't help but reach out and touch Gu Kai Xuan's little face. When she looked up, she noticed Sheng Hongye was watching her. She quickly said, "Mr. Sheng, don't worry. It won't take ten minutes for Kai Xuan to wake up."

Sheng Hongye looked away and said in a deep voice, "I'm not doubting your medical skills. Let's go."

Su Ling was a bit surprised. Why would he look at her like that if he didn't doubt her medical skills? Did she have something on her face? She quickly wiped her face a couple of times, and Sheng Hongye had already pushed the hospital bed outside.

The two of them entered the elevator and arrived on the fifth floor. Almost all the rooms were empty. Sheng Hongye chose a room closest to the stairs and pushed little Kai Xuan inside.

"You wait here; I'll go downstairs to get the IV medication. Tell me what's needed," Su Ling said crisply and closed the door.

Since she started working at Tianfu, Su Ling had gotten used to the busy life in the operating room every day. Now suddenly having nothing to do, she felt an inexplicable emptiness. Looking at the empty corridor, she felt unexpectedly sad and sighed helplessly. She gathered herself and prepared to wake up Gu Kai Xuan.

As she turned around, she heard a loud crash. When she looked back, she was startled. A zombie in a patient's gown had broken the glass and was trying to get inside the room.
