Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 9: The Consciousness of Being a Flower Vase

Su Ling furrowed her brows; she had to go to Lizhou to meet her benefactor no matter what.

If her speculation was correct, her benefactor from her previous life probably wanted to go there too. Moreover, only in the presence of people could her medical skills and the system reach their full potential...

Just as she was about to think it through carefully, Gu Kai Xuan suddenly pouted and burst into tears.

"I want Grandma... Wah... I want to find Grandma."

Seeing the tears streaming down the child's cheeks, Su Ling felt a pang of heartache and hurriedly went over to comfort him.

"Kai Xuan, don't cry; crying will make your wound worse."

Sheng Hongye immediately jumped in through the window.

He crouched by the bedside, holding Gu Kai Xuan's soft little hand, and spoke gently, "Kai Xuan, be good. Grandma has gone to a faraway place. If she knows you're crying, she will be worried."

Gu Kai Xuan cried even harder, sniffling, "Uncle lied to me; did Grandma die?"

As soon as this question came out, Sheng Hongye fell silent.

Guan Shan and Li Xueying also climbed in from outside. Seeing Su Ling standing in the room, Li Xueying's expression changed slightly. With tearful eyes, she asked, "Brother Hongye, who is this?"

Su Ling quickly considered the situation and extended her hand to Li Xueying.

These people were all acquaintances of Sheng Hongye, and their relationship was naturally closer than hers. To avoid misunderstandings, she felt it necessary to introduce herself carefully.

"Hello, Miss Li. My surname is Su, Su Ling. I met Mr. Sheng on the road."

Li Xueying glanced at her and shook hands briefly before quickly letting go and then walked over to the bed to check on Gu Kai Xuan.

"Kai Xuan, what's wrong with you?"

Gu Kai Xuan had been crying all along and remained silent.

Seeing Sheng Hongye looking agitated, Su Ling hurried over.

"Kai Xuan, sweetheart, Auntie will bring you some delicious food later. Tell Auntie what you want to eat."

Su Ling's voice was gentle, as if possessing some magical power, and Gu Kai Xuan slowly stopped crying.

"Auntie, I... I want chocolate."

"Okay, Auntie will get it for you right away."

Su Ling went to the window but was stopped by Sheng Hongye.

"I'll go."

His voice was low, tinged with an unusual hoarseness.

With one hand on the windowsill, he effortlessly jumped out.

Guan Shan couldn't help but feel surprised and glanced back at Su Ling.

Mr. Sheng actually volunteered to get something for a woman?

Li Xueying's expression also changed several times, and when she looked at Su Ling, a hint of displeasure flashed in her eyes.

Su Ling furrowed her brow. She hoped she wouldn't be mistaken for a love rival by this Li person.

Swearing on her conscience, all she wanted now was to live a good life and nothing else.

While she was contemplating, Sheng Hongye had already returned to the room, peeled the chocolate, and handed it to Gu Kai Xuan.

Then he turned around and said to Guan Shan in a deep voice, "Kai Xuan just had surgery. He'll need at least five days before he can leave. There's another survivor with a leg injury here. We can use this time to gather some supplies."

"Understood, Mr. Sheng. I'll take care of it right away."

Guan Shan took a look at the young man lying on the bed and then left through the window.

Li Xueying reached out and held onto Sheng Hongye, her eyes filled with glistening tears.

"Brother Hongye, is it really the end of the world? What are we going to do in the future?"

Sheng Hongye pushed Li Xueying away, furrowed his brows, and walked to the window. His tall figure instantly dimmed the light in the room.

"Everything is unknown; no one knows what the future will be like. We can only do our best to live each day."

Sheng Hongye's voice was calm, as if he was speaking to himself and to others at the same time.

Su Ling nodded along but suddenly felt dizzy, grabbing onto the bed's guardrail.

"Miss Su, are you okay?"

At some point, Sheng Hongye had come to Su Ling's side, and his tall figure cast a shadow over her head, giving off a suffocating pressure.

Su Ling snapped out of it and subconsciously took a step back.

"It's nothing, I might just be a little nervous..."

Sheng Hongye narrowed his eyes and reached out to support her. "There's another bed; you should rest for a while."

Su Ling gratefully glanced at him. "I'm fine."

Li Xueying immediately followed, holding onto Sheng Hongye's arm, and coquettishly said, "Brother Hongye, you've been up all night, don't worry about others. I'll stay here with Kai Xuan, you should get some rest."

"No need."

Sheng Hongye coldly rejected her and then pulled Su Ling forcefully, pushing her onto the third bed, displaying his domineering CEO manner to the fullest.

Li Xueying's eyes filled with jealousy, and her gaze at Su Ling grew colder.

Su Ling couldn't help but curse inwardly. This woman indeed sees her as a potential rival. It seems that the days ahead might not be easy.

At that moment, Sheng Hongye's wrist watch suddenly emitted a series of beeping sounds. He glanced at it and stood up.

"I'll step out for a moment; you all rest."

As the door closed, only the two of them and the two patients remained in the room, creating an awkward atmosphere.

Su Ling was about to say something to ease the tension when Li Xueying suddenly spoke.

"Miss Su, you're not planning to follow Brother Hongye all the time, are you?"

Li Xueying's question was very direct, which made Su Ling feel quite displeased.

Even if she followed Sheng Hongye, it didn't mean there was anything between them. Moreover, this was the apocalypse, a time of continuous natural disasters and rampant zombies. Relying solely on one person's strength was simply impossible. Even with her superpower-reinforcement system, she couldn't survive without eating or drinking. To survive, she needed to rely on the strength of a team, and Sheng Hongye, who remained calm, composed, and skilled in combat, happened to be a suitable candidate. At least until they reached Lizhou, he was a good companion.

Seeing Li Xueying's expression turning uglier, Su Ling chuckled softly and raised her delicate and beautiful face. "Miss Li is correct. At least, I have no intention of leaving now."

Li Xueying's face immediately darkened further.

"You better not have any designs on Brother Hongye; he could never like you."

Su Ling chuckled again and retorted, "Does Sheng Hongye really like you? I can't see it at all. To ensure peaceful coexistence in the future, I hope Miss Li can put away those dirty thoughts and stop projecting them onto others."

Li Xueying turned pale with anger and stomped her high-heeled shoes to the bedside, speaking in a frustrated tone, "Shut up! I don't want to coexist peacefully with you. If you know what's good for you, leave here now and stop clinging to Brother Hongye."

Su Ling also stood up, her 1.75-meter tall figure towering over Li Xueying, who was half a head shorter even with high-heeled shoes.

"It's your 'Brother Hongye' who asked me to stay. Even if I wanted to leave, he wouldn't agree."

Looking down at Li Xueying, she sneered, "A vase should have the consciousness of being a vase."

"You're the vase!"

Li Xueying angrily raised her hand and slapped Su Ling's face.
