Chapter 42: Chapter 42 Carol's Awakening
On the second underground floor, in a private apartment.
Ed asked Carol to bring him some hot water. This grumpy man soaked his feet and drank some white wine, yelling:
"Shit, I was out here moving bodies all day, it was smelly and tiring, and I ended up getting paid less than a third of what those guys were getting by hanging around with guns."
"That guy named Custer is also a bastard. I am obviously the best machine control worker in the factory, but after I came to him, I can only make a living by selling hard labor."
"We shouldn't have listened to his sweet talk in the first place, but should have looked for other shelters. Maybe we could have lived a better life that way."
Ed's voice was very loud. Carol was afraid that his complaints would reach other people's ears, so she walked over and whispered:
"Ed, at least we live safely here. I will work harder to make life better."
This sentence seemed to have touched some nerves in Ed. He raised his hand and slapped Carol hard on the face, causing the woman to stagger.
"Asshole, are you looking down on me?"
Even so, Ed was still not satisfied. He pulled out his belt and beat his wife again and again. Sophia, who was studying in the room, heard the noise outside and hurried to her father, trying to dissuade him, but was pushed to the ground by the furious man. She got a cut on her forehead on the corner of the table and fell to the ground.
In the evening, Leon was reading in the office when Amy walked in with a heavy face.
"Boss, there was a murder in the apartment on the second floor underground."
Leon's face darkened when he heard this, and he quickly asked:
"Who died? What happened?"
"Ed, an employee in the logistics department."
"According to their neighbors, Ed was drunk and was domesticating his wife Carol. Later, their daughter Sophia was also involved. In the end, Carol resisted and accidentally killed her husband."
Hearing that it was this couple, Leon nodded thoughtfully and asked the secretary:
"How are Carol and Sophia? Are they seriously injured?"
"Their injuries were not too serious. Ms. Carol had minor fractures and bruises, and Sophia hit her head and had a minor concussion."
Leon took a sip of hot coffee and continued:
"Since it was Ed who committed domestic violence first, it can be considered excusable. Let's wait until Carol and the other one recover from their injuries before deciding on the punishment for this matter."
"By the way, has Ed's body been dealt with?"
Amy nodded, walked behind Leon and started massaging his shoulders.
"Someone has already dealt with it. All Umbrella Corporation employees have been educated on the fact that we will become zombies after we die."
"No one will forget."
Meanwhile, in the base's medical room.
Carol's face was filled with tears. She endured the physical and mental pain as she looked at her unconscious daughter on another bed, feeling mixed emotions.
She killed her husband with her own hands, even though it was in self-defense, even though it was impulsive, even though she was angry that her daughter was hurt, but at the moment she resisted, it seemed as if some shackles in her heart were opened.
She found that she was not someone who lacked courage, she was just too submissive and forgot to resist.
Now, she and her young daughter are the only ones left at home. No matter what, for the sake of her child and herself, she must shoulder the corresponding responsibilities.
Maybe I should live more bravely.
At noon the next day, Leon was still playing games leisurely as usual, and Professor Amlin came over with a serious look on his face.
"Mr. Custer, our radio system has detected a suspicious signal."
"It's 30 kilometers south of our base, on Interstate 85. It should be the vehicle's built-in communication system."
"I suspect it's a group of well-equipped survivors. They may have seen our recruitment information and are heading towards the base."
Leon's expression also became serious.
"What's their speed? How long will it take them to reach our base?"
"Their speed is not very fast. According to their current speed, they will reach our base in about two hours."
Lyon nodded, and Professor Amlin said:
"Okay, I get it. Go back to your work, Professor."
Time was running out. After Amlin left, Leon immediately took out his radio, tuned to the security department's channel, and said:
"Moir, Daryl, suspend the construction of the wall and bring back all the staff from the logistics department. We have an important mission."
Although the two captains were somewhat puzzled, they immediately answered:
"Got it, boss. We'll be back right away."
It would probably take some time for them to finish packing, but Leon didn't wait. He changed into his combat uniform, drove a modified jeep and set off first.
After calculating the distance, Leon drove the car to a hillside 20 kilometers away from the base, took out a telescope and began to observe.
A few minutes later, a convoy gradually appeared in the telescope, led by two military trucks, followed by two tanks, several military jeeps, and finally some ordinary vans and cars.
Through the car window, Leon could see some survivors dressed as soldiers and civilians, and even some old people and children.
Seeing this, Leon breathed a sigh of relief. In this kind of world, a group that can take in the elderly and children at least has basic moral bottom line.
Such groups should not be predators.
He took out his radio, tuned in, and said:
"Moir, Daryl, set up an ambush at the intersection of Interstate 85, 5 kilometers away from our base. I will come over to meet you now."
"Hurry up, we don't have much time left."
The radio responded immediately.
"Yes, Boss. We have already set off and are expected to arrive at the ambush point in 10 minutes."
Putting down the radio, Lyon rushed to the ambush point from another route as quickly as possible.
Seeing that More and his men were already in place, he ordered all the soldiers to hide on the side of the road or beside buildings, in places that could not be seen clearly from a distance.
He and the two captains parked three modified military trucks horizontally on the road and pointed three heavy machine guns in the direction where the convoy was coming.
After about 10 minutes, a convoy headed by military trucks gradually appeared in the eyes of Lyon and others. They also found the modified trucks parked across the road. Although they slowed down, they still slowly approached.
When the two sides were about 100 meters apart, the convoy stopped moving and a middle-aged officer wearing a military cap and with a stubble on his face got off the truck.
He walked up to Leon and the others alone and shouted:
"I'm Colonel William Hanke, former defense commander for the CDC in Atlanta."
"Excuse me, are you from the Umbrella Company?"
Leon got out of the military truck, came to the middle-aged colonel, looked him over, and said:
"I am the manager of the Umbrella Corporation, Leon Custer. May I ask what brings you here, Colonel William?"
Colonel William carefully observed Leon for more than ten seconds, then stretched out his right hand, shook hands with Leon, and said with a serious expression:
"We have lost contact with our superiors and gathered some survivors on the way. After hearing the news that the CDC still exists, I decided to return here with my soldiers to protect the glimmer of hope for humanity to defeat the virus."
Leon smiled, but said in a serious voice:
"Colonel William, you and your soldiers have noble character, but the Atlanta CDC belongs to our Umbrella Corporation's territory, and we do not allow people from other organizations to be stationed nearby."
"Will you and your soldiers join us?"
