Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Heading to the Farm
As Leon's words fell, the atmosphere at the scene suddenly became cold.
Colonel William narrowed his eyes and stared at Leon for half a minute. Seeing that the boy in front of him looked at him fearlessly, the middle-aged colonel's expression relaxed slightly and said:
"We are all homeless now. We are not opposed to joining other organizations, but we know nothing about you. I cannot rashly make decisions for my soldiers."
"Is Dr. Melfa still here? I was hoping to talk to her."
Lyon hesitated for a few seconds and said to Colonel William:
"We have cleared a high-end hotel outside the base. You and your soldiers can stay there temporarily. After Dr. Melfa and I have confirmed the situation, you can enter the base alone to talk to her."
Colonel William nodded and said:
"No problem, we'll follow your rules."
He thought for a moment and said:
"There are about 40 survivors with us. We are only helping them out of military principles. If you can convince them to join your company, we don't mind."
Leon shook his head gently, with a faint confident smile on his lips:
"Let them do the same as you do. Let them observe for a few more days and take a closer look before making a decision."
In the evening, Lyon invited Colonel William to have dinner together. Also attending were Dr. Melfa and his wife and four professors from the Institute of Technology. This time he did not choose to host the banquet in his own reception room, but changed the venue to the public cafeteria on the first floor.
Leon had only been to this cafeteria a few times, except for banquets. He chose eight of the highest-end meal sets, which included wine, meat, candy, and staple food. Each set was worth 50 contribution points, which was roughly equivalent to half a day's salary for an ordinary logistics employee.
After the guests and hosts were seated, Lyon introduced the guests to each other one by one.
Then, with a smile on his face, he asked Dr. Melfa:
"Doctor, how are the students I assigned to you doing? They are all top students in the Biology Department of the Polytechnic Institute."
Dr. Melfa still had that serious expression on her face. She said calmly:
"It's OK. They are barely qualified to be interns here and can serve as our assistants. But if we want them to be really useful, they must be trained for more than 5 years."
Leon smiled bitterly and nodded, saying:
"There is no other way. There are too few survivors now, and it is even more difficult to find people with professional skills."
Dr. Melfa's expression faltered for a moment, then he looked at Leon and said:
"You've worked very hard, Leon. I witnessed with my own eyes that you built such a vibrant organization in just three months. It's simply a miracle."
After that, Dr. Melfa turned to look at Colonel William and said:
"Colonel William, I know why you are here. A few months ago, you followed the orders of your superiors and took the soldiers away and abandoned us. As a result, the entire research center's staff died or escaped. Jenner and I almost gave up our last hope."
"It was Mr. Custer who found us and took all the responsibilities, allowing our research to continue."
"He has saved more than hundreds of people in the past few months. I can vouch for it with my reputation that Mr. Custer is a good man who is trustworthy."
Colonel William and Dr. Melfa looked at each other for a few seconds, then nodded and said:
"I trust your judgement, Doctor."
Afterwards, several people at the table started chatting, but except for Leon and William, these people were intellectuals with high-end academic qualifications, and the topic of the chat soon turned to areas that he could not understand at all.
Lyon looked at Colonel William, who also had a confused look on his face, smiled bitterly, took out a box of cigars from his pocket and threw it to him, then leaned back in his chair and observed the people coming and going.
Most of the people dining here are from the logistics department. Lyon can only tell that they look familiar, but he can't remember the names of most of them.
They finished a day's work and still looked a little tired. They came here with their families to have a meal. After chatting and playing for a while, they all showed happy smiles.
Leon didn't know whether they had many complaints in their hearts, but in any case, he felt that he had done his job with a clear conscience.
In a corner of the restaurant, Leon also found Sean and Rick's family. They were sitting around a dining table with faint smiles on their faces, sharing a roast chicken.
I haven't seen this family in the past few days. I don't know how Rick and Sean discussed things, but seeing how happy they are now, things should be developing in a good direction.
They chatted until dinner was over, and then everyone said goodbye and returned to their rooms. Before leaving, Colonel William said to Lyon:
"After three days, I will ask the soldiers for their opinions. Whether they are willing to stay or not, I will stay."
The next morning, after waking up, Lyon found that he did not have much official business. It happened that several students sent by the Engineering Department to Hershel Farm were about to leave that morning.
After thinking about it, he pinched Amy's little nose who was sleeping on his chest. After the girl woke up, Leon asked softly:
"My beautiful lady, you must be bored here. Why don't you accompany me to the farm today to play around, ride horses, enjoy the breeze, and enjoy some rural delicacies?"
The girl put her arms around his neck, pressed her soft body against his, and hummed, which was considered her consent.
Hershel's farm was not too far from the base, about 60 kilometers away. At around 10 o'clock in the morning, Lyon drove his modified military jeep to the destination. There were also five students who arrived with him to learn agricultural knowledge.
When Leon got out of the car with Amy, who was wearing a white dress, he saw an old man with gray hair and beard waiting with two young girls not far from the road.
After more than ten seconds, a car drove over quickly. Glenn got out of the car in a hurry and said to Leon with an apologetic look on his face:
"Sorry, Boss, we were exploring another town yesterday, so we were a little slow to get your message this morning."
Leon smiled and patted Glenn on the shoulder, saying:
"Don't worry. Do you think I'm a petty person?"
"Let's go. We can talk later. Don't keep the owner here waiting too long."
After that, he took Amy's hand and walked towards the Hershel family with a warm smile.
When the two groups of people approached, the old man with gray hair and a serious expression smiled and said:
"Welcome, Mr. Custer, you are a guest from afar. I have prepared a sumptuous lunch. You are welcome to enjoy it together."
"It's my honor, Mr. Hershel. I just happened to bring my friends to your farm and want to experience the real pastoral life."
Leon reached out and shook hands with Hershel, and the smile on his face became even warmer. He was handsome and had a good temperament, and his sunny and warm smile easily won their favor.
"You're welcome. Our farm hasn't had so many guests for a long time."
