Chapter 8
Upon arriving in the capital, a mansion was prepared for me.
“This will be Mister Yoshinobu’s mansion. Our family will cover the maintenance costs and such. So feel free to hire people without any concerns.”
“Lord Alex, this is too big. Another place one-tenth of this would be sufficient.”
“From guards to maids and butlers, we have prepared everything. You don’t need to worry about anything. Besides, it’s better to have a larger space. For example, when you need to examine many people.”
Alex persuaded me, and I ended up living in this mansion…
During dinner that night, I noticed something.
“Sarina, why are you here?”
“Huh?”
“Doesn’t Rizark’s household also have a house in the capital?”
“Well, there is. But I came with you, Mister Yoshinobu. We are together.”
“No, no, this won’t do. It’ll be a scandal if a noblewoman stays in the same house as a man!”
“It’s too late for that. Besides, no proper marriage proposal would come to me, a nobleman’s daughter who’s suffering from lung disease…”
“Mister Yoshinobu, am I a bother?”
Sarina looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“N-No, of course not. Don’t worry, you can stay. Just don’t make that sad face!”
“I’m glad. I’ll be with you always.”
Sarina stopped crying, and her face started to brighten with happiness.
For a moment, I could see the future of being dominated by Sarina…
The next day, I started my medical practice.
Maybe it was because of the recommendations from the Duke of Squall, but noble ladies visited one after another. I examined them and prescribed medication.
Amongst them, some had only colds or other illnesses. Of course, I provided them with appropriate medicines.
After a few days, the first patients who received treatment began to show improvement. And it became a topic of discussion among the nobility.
At night, Sarina and I took a break after a busy day.
“Sarina, well done today.”
“Yes. Mister Yoshinobu, you’ve worked hard too.”
“I’m grateful to have you here. Dealing with noble ladies is a bit overwhelming for me.”
“I’m glad I could be of help. We’ll have many more visitors from tomorrow, so let’s do our best, Mister Yoshinobu.”
Sarina’s smile comforted me. Then out of nowhere, the door burst open, and an unwelcome guest appeared.
“You’re the doctor, aren’t you?”
The man entered the room with soldiers.
“And who might you be?” I asked, hiding Sarina behind me and conjuring a pistol, ready to fire at any moment.
“I’m from the Cactus Marquis family. You’re ordered to provide your medical services. Obey promptly, or…”
One of the soldiers behind him laid his hand on his sword.
“I won’t comply with that request. Besides, we are under the protection of the Duke of Squall. Is the Cactus Marquis family ignoring the Duke’s protection?”
The man sneered.
“Nice resolve, but even with the Duke’s protection, you’ll achieve nothing if you die here, don’t you know? Oh, and you have a pretty lady with you. She’d make a nice souvenir for me,”
He said while leering at Sarina and licking one’s lips.
“Someone of Cactus Marquis. Are you going to kidnap me? Daughter of Viscount Moss, Sarina Moss!”
Sarina stepped forward and revealed her identity, trying to ask him to back off…
“Heh, as if a viscount’s daughter can defy a marquis. Even if you cause a scandal, you’ll just have to swallow your tears. By the way, I’m Ismar Cactus, the second son of the Cactus Marquis.”
The man, who identified himself as Ismar, was taunting Salina while gesturing a licking movement as he ogled at her body.
Frightened, Sarina stepped back.
“And you know what? Women like her can’t survive in the noble society after being tainted. After I’m done with her, she’ll become a plaything for my subordinates. You’ll regret crossing me.”
Sarina trembled.
I was enraged by Ismar’s intentions to use Sarina as a plaything.
“In essence, you want to arrest me and make Sarina your plaything!?”
“Don’t open your mouth, you low birth! You will be my slave and keep making the medicine. That woman will do what feels good.”
The soldiers behind Ismar burst with laughter.
I shot the soldier behind him in the head with my pistol.
After shooting down the remaining bullet to that soldier; I summoned a rifle and killed all the remaining soldiers.
“What have you done!” Ismar shouted, looking at the dead soldiers.
“What have I done? Just taking care of some thieves who broke into someone’s house.”
I also shot bullets through Ismar’s foot. Both of them.
“Aah! I thought you were a doctor!”
“Unfortunately, I’m not a doctor. I can only treat injuries.”
“Do you think you can get away with this?”
“You are using the name of Cactus Marquis to rob someone. I think you should be the one thinking if you could get away with this?”
“Wh-what!?”
“We will see how your parent will handle this scandal. Will they defend you?”
I put Ismar alongside the dead bodies of the attackers at the gate and attached a note listing their crimes.
“Sarina, there might be more attacks here. It’s cramped, but there’s a safe place. Would you like to spend the night there instead?”
I invited the slightly trembling Sarina.
“Sure. I will follow you anywhere.”
Sarina accepted my offer, taking my hand as we left together.
