Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Intruders
"Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!"
The sound of adamantium blades clashing against twin daggers echoed repeatedly, sending bursts of sparks into the air. Weapon XI's elusive figure relentlessly pursued Alex, launching a frenzy of attacks.
However, Alex, wielding his adamantium sword, only grew more confident. Though Weapon XI's attacks remained as ferocious as a torrential storm, Alex had gradually discerned the patterns in his opponent's moves. Each exchange grew easier for him to counter. Several times, he came within a hair's breadth of turning the tables and defeating Weapon XI outright.
Why?
Because he had discovered Weapon XI's vulnerability in its so-called "instantaneous movement" ability.
Instantaneous movement referred to the ability to shift positions so quickly that it appeared to happen in a single moment. Alex was no stranger to such a convenient ability. It was a recurring concept in many of the Japanese anime he loved in his previous life, such as Dragon Ball, Pokémon, and Saint Seiya.
But what truly ingrained the concept into his mind was an anime called A Certain Magical Index.
In that show, abilities like superpowers and psychic phenomena were developed scientifically. The way spatial manipulators operated closely resembled Weapon XI's movements.
A spatial manipulator, as described in the anime, calculated their position in an 11-dimensional space, then pinpointed their destination in that same space before "folding" the coordinates to move instantly. It was akin to folding a piece of paper so that two points overlapped, creating zero distance between them. This was the principle behind "instantaneous movement." (Note: The universe we live in is theorized to be 11-dimensional, but humans can only perceive three dimensions.)
Spatial movement, coordinate transfer, blind spot teleportation, and true instantaneous movement were the four most common types of spatial manipulation. Among these, Alex realized that Weapon XI's so-called "instantaneous movement" was merely spatial movement, not true instantaneous movement.
Nothing in the world was without flaws, and instantaneous movement was no exception. Its limitations included:
1. Conditions for Activation – The user must sense their target location before moving.
2. Cooldown Time – A fixed interval must pass between successive uses.
3. Random Displacement – While the user can move to a target location, they cannot always guarantee precise arrival.
In essence, such abilities were far better suited for escape than combat. An unlucky user might even teleport into lava or onto the barrel of a gun!
Throughout the battle, Alex noticed that Weapon XI needed to visually confirm its target location before teleporting. If Alex moved away during that brief moment, Weapon XI's attack would miss. Conversely, if Alex preemptively attacked the spot Weapon XI was teleporting to, the latter would arrive directly into harm's way!
This meant that Weapon XI's "instantaneous movement" was a conditional spatial transfer. Its greatest weakness lay in the prerequisites for activation: Weapon XI couldn't teleport again while mid-transfer!
"Clang!"
Alex swiftly sidestepped from his previous position, evading the attack. His counterstrike, however, was effortlessly deflected by Weapon XI. By now, their prolonged skirmish had lost its meaning.
"If that's all you've got, you'd better be prepared to die!"
Alex smirked and taunted Weapon XI. Predictably, the latter responded with another teleportation and a sharp assault with its twin blades.
"Time to send you on your way!"
As Alex spoke, his body moved like lightning. He sheathed his blade to his right side and extended his left arm slightly forward—a classic stance for iai sword drawing.
Simultaneously, Weapon XI locked onto Alex's anticipated position through instinct and visual cues. Activating its teleportation ability, its figure vanished from its original spot.
But just before they clashed, chaos erupted in a neighboring room.
Logan (Wolverine) and Victor (Sabretooth) burst into the scene mid-battle. Sabretooth's claws plunged deep into Wolverine's torso, eliciting howls of pain.
"You're too weak, Logan!"
With a cruel grin, Victor hurled Logan against the wall. "Boom!" The wall shattered, sending Logan and rubble crashing into Alex's room. Victor leaped after him, landing a powerful kick that sent Logan flying even further.
"Logan!"
A woman's scream rang out. Kara, chasing close behind, dashed into the room to find Logan battered but alive.
"Little sister… you've escaped?"
"Big sister!"
Kara cried in relief and hugged her sister tightly.
On the other side of the room, Victor's actions inadvertently sent Logan hurtling toward Alex. Coincidentally, this happened as Alex's blade was about to strike, and Weapon XI teleported into the same vicinity. Logan appeared directly between them!
"What the hell?!"
Alex was beyond frustrated. His iai technique was already at the point of no return. Left with no choice, he adjusted the trajectory of his slash to target the ground beneath Logan instead.
"Shinming Style: Iai Slash!"
With the force of a thunderbolt, Alex's blade struck the ground. The resulting shockwave sent shattered debris flying toward Logan and Weapon XI. Though both were injured, their rapid healing factors rendered the attack largely ineffective.
"Zzt! Zzt!"
Suddenly, Weapon XI unleashed its trump card. Its eyes glowed red, firing twin beams of scorching laser light. The intense heat raised the temperature of the room by several degrees as the lasers ripped through the air with a piercing shriek.
Logan, already battered, took the full brunt of the attack. Bad luck piled on as he was blasted by Sabretooth, pummeled by Alex's debris, and now struck by Weapon XI's lasers. Yet Logan's adamantium claws managed to shield him just enough, and his extraordinary regeneration allowed him to survive unscathed.
"Boom! Boom!"
Though Logan endured, the impact sent him flying backward. He crashed directly into Alex, knocking them both off balance.
"Where the hell did these intruders come from?!" Alex roared in exasperation.
