The Former BOPE Police Oficcer

Chapter 9: Chapter 17 – “The Man Behind the Medals”

The sun was shining brightly in Los Angeles as Kendall Jenner pulled into Gigi's driveway. Hailey Bieber was in the passenger seat, adjusting her sunglasses. The two were excited to visit Gigi in her new home, curious to finally learn more about the mysterious man who had changed her life.

"I'm curious to see what this Rafael guy is like," Kendall commented as she got out of the car.

"Me too. Gigi has never been this mysterious about anyone before," Hailey replied, laughing as she followed Kendall toward the door.

Gigi opened the door before they could knock, her smile beaming.

"Girls! Come in!" she said, pulling them both into a warm hug.

"Wow, your house is amazing!" Kendall exclaimed as she looked around.

"It's really beautiful, Gigi. And the energy here is so good." — Hailey commented, taking off her sunglasses and observing the details of the interior.

— Thank you! We're still adjusting a few things, but we're very happy here. — Gigi replied, leading them through the living room.

The house was tastefully decorated, mixing modern touches with cozy elements. However, what caught Kendall and Hailey's attention was one wall in particular, where medals, certificates and several framed photos were hanging.

— Wait... What's this? — Kendall asked, stopping in front of the wall.

Hailey approached, her eyes wide as she observed the pictures and medals.

— Is this all Rafael's? — Hailey asked, her voice full of curiosity.

Gigi smiled and crossed her arms, watching their reactions.

— Yes. This is his wall. He brought all this when we moved in, and I wanted to display it here. He didn't want to, he said it was too much, but I insisted.

Kendall took a step closer to examine the photos. There was one where Rafael was wearing a camouflage uniform, holding a gun, with a serious look. Another showed him masked, probably on a mission. And there was a third, with him dressed in black, in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, surrounded by other men in the same uniform.

"My God, he's even more impressive than I imagined," Kendall said, impressed.

"Who is this man, Gigi?" Hailey asked, turning to her friend.

"It's... complicated," Gigi replied, laughing slightly. "Rafael has a degree in Physical Education, but before that, he had an intense career. He served in the Brazilian Army's special forces and then worked in BOPE."

"Special forces? What do you mean?" Kendall asked, intrigued.

"He was part of the DCT, the Counter-Terrorism Detachment. It's a top-secret unit. He told me a little about it, but he said there's a lot he can't reveal."

Hailey looked at one of the medals carefully.

— And BOPE? I've heard of it... Isn't it that battalion that operates in dangerous areas in Brazil?

— Exactly. They deal with the most extreme situations, especially in favelas. Rafael told me some stories, but honestly, just hearing it gave me goosebumps. He said the missions were intense, but that he was proud to help protect people.

Kendall stared at a photo where Rafael was masked, staring straight into the camera.

— This man... He's not just impressive, he's intimidating. I mean, in a good way. He exudes strength.

— He is. — Gigi replied with a smile, her tone soft. — But at the same time, he's kind, caring, and protective. It's a unique combination.

Hailey laughed.

— Unique is an understatement. And you're saying he's all this national hero and he's still... gorgeous?

Gigi rolled her eyes, but couldn't help but smile.

— Yes, he is gorgeous. But he doesn't like all this attention. To him, these things on the wall are just part of the work he's done.

"Gigi, this is more than just work," Kendall commented, pointing to the medals. "These things tell a story. He's extraordinary."

Hailey looked at a last photo, where Rafael was smiling next to a group of men in the same uniform.

"And what's it like being with someone with such an intense past?" Hailey asked, turning her attention to Gigi.

"It's incredible," Gigi replied, her eyes shining. "Rafael has a way of making me feel safe like no one else. He carries a weight of his history, but he never lets it affect who he is with me or Khai."

"Speaking of which, where is he?" Kendall asked, looking around.

"He went for a run. He loves to train outside when he can," Gigi replied, as she led them to the kitchen.

While they prepared a snack, the friends continued to discuss the wall and Rafael's past.

— You know the media is going to freak out when they find out more about him, right? — Kendall commented, taking a bite of an apple slice.

"I know." Gigi sighed. "But I don't care. What matters is what we have here, inside this house."

"And what you have is impressive, my friend." Hailey said, smiling.

"Thanks." — Gigi replied, looking at the wall in the distance.

As the sun began to set, the conversation flowed, and Gigi realized how much Rafael had impacted her life and how she admired him for everything he was, both for his achievements and for the incredible person he proved to be every day.
