Chapter 206 - The Treasure Chest (Part 1)
Hundreds of people entered the supply point, but in the end, only a small group managed to stay here without being swept away by the water.
Of course, not everyone was as unlucky as Jiang Hui and her group, who happened to be caught in the worst of the storm. Some people, by chance, found the entrance to the second level early and avoided being swept away by the water. Others used clever tricks to escape the flood, and some managed to outwit the disaster and avoid the fate of being washed away. In short, everyone had their own way of surviving.
So, among this small group of survivors, there were no real fools—everyone was difficult to deal with.
However, at this supply point, people obviously could not be “finished off” with a single shot, it would be nearly impossible for such a small group of people to defeat dozens or even hundreds of enemies.
To take it a step further, even if they were to recklessly deplete their simulated chest armor’s energy in a fierce battle, even if they were able to defeat their enemies, it would clearly be a rash decision when it came to sustaining themselves for the rest of the competition.
Thus, the remaining people had become more cautious and were unlikely to make rash moves. Of course, if it were for resources, the above concerns could be disregarded.
Just like now—
Having snatched the resources from the “delivery team” of four, Jiang Hui and the others quickly organized them before leaving the narrow passage, intending to see what lay ahead.
Before they reached the end of the passage, they could already hear loud noises coming from outside. It sounded like hundreds of ducks quacking, all in a huge uproar.
Jiang Hui listened carefully and realized that many people were shouting loudly, some high, some low. The sound seemed to come from different spaces, and she couldn’t tell what was going on to cause such a commotion. The noise made the steps of the group, which had been firm, slow down involuntarily.
“There must be at least a hundred people inside.” Huan Xian communicated through his voice.
Jiang Hui didn’t doubt him, nor did she ask how he knew. She had always trusted his judgments on this journey. He had never been wrong, each time as accurate as if he had an all-knowing guidebook. If he said there were more than a hundred people, it must be true.
She couldn’t help but glance at him, though. Had he changed a bit? He seemed more focused and driven now… He had always appeared somewhat indifferent before.
However, this thought only lasted for a moment. Jiang Hui preferred to focus on the current situation rather than ponder her teammates’ thoughts.
…Over a hundred people, shouting and clamoring, and with the few scattered words from earlier, it was almost certain that the area ahead was the place where resources were being dropped. She really couldn’t imagine what had them all jumping around and causing such a ruckus. Just from the sounds, she could picture how intense the competition for resources must be.
They had definitely arrived too late, but it wasn’t entirely hopeless. “Fortune favors the bold,” and resources were certainly part of that!
The group exchanged a glance, remaining highly alert, and exited the tunnel, stepping into an entirely open space.
Just as they instinctively tried to hide as they usually would—
“Glub, glub…” A strange sound suddenly echoed, like something heavy was rolling toward them. From the sound, it seemed quite massive.
Almost at the same time, several of these noises sounded from all directions, only to eventually drift off toward different areas.
Jiang Hui widened her eyes as she stared at the vast cave before her, dumbfounded—what was this place?
The towering, pitch-black ceiling seemed endless, and the rock walls on either side stretched out far into the distance. Everywhere, the jagged mountains rose and fell, scattered across the entire space. Several irregularly shaped valleys appeared between the rocky peaks, their heights varying, leading into the rock walls. The structure was so complex that anyone inside felt a disorienting sense of spatial distortion.
Moreover, whether on the high rock mountains, the cleverly sunken valley bottoms, or the large connected stone walls, there were tracks embedded into them, which seemed to serve no clear purpose. They resembled double tracks carved by human hands, disrupting the natural beauty of the cave.
Jiang Hui looked into the distance and noticed a huge pond in the direction extending down for miles. The water was a stunning shade of turquoise with hints of blue, making the strange cave appear almost like a fairyland.
“This place, once you go in, there’s no coming back,” Jiang Hui muttered to herself. That was her first instinct.
Earlier, they had optimistically considered retreating to this place to recharge if the situation outside turned bad. They had preferred to focus on having full energy for the rest of the competition, ensuring they could finish the whole course, rather than chasing after elusive resources.
But now, looking at the situation in front of them, they realized how naive their previous thinking had been. If they ran into this cursed place, would they even be able to find their way back?!
“Glub, glub—”
Before they could observe any more, another strange rolling sound echoed, and this time it seemed to be coming very close to them.
“They’re running that way, hurry up and chase them! We can’t let those people beat us to it again. I refuse to believe that with just a few of us, we can’t grab one!”
“Damn it, this thing drops with no rules. Is this a joke? I’m going to run myself to death!”
“You still dare to talk? If it wasn’t for your slow pace last time, holding us back, those guys wouldn’t have gotten ahead of us. I still haven’t settled that score with you—what a useless person, always messing things up!”
“But you still need me, don’t you…? And it’s not really my fault. Even if we found it first, could we have beaten their five with just our four? Could we?”
“…Stop talking nonsense! You still have enough breath to argue? Save it and chase the treasure box. As soon as it lands, it’ll start locking in place. If we don’t grab it right away, someone else will take it.”
“If this time, if it’s still—still—”
“Ah…” The person, panting heavily, saw the target box, and their eyes lit up. But when they glanced at the faces of the people standing next to the box, their expression instantly darkened.
“Who are you?! How dare you steal our treasure box!”
“Boss, what do we do? I told you to go after the one over there, the one closer. Now look, it’s been taken by someone else—”
“Shut up!” The leader was furious, veins bulging on his forehead.
“Move it!” He stormed ahead, yelling at the others, thinking that these idiots were just dragging him down. If he hadn’t been looking for someone, he would have ditched these fools long ago.
The others, even if they were dull, quickly realized that people were coming to fight for the treasure.
If they couldn’t beat five people, could they not beat just three?!
Well then, if they won, they would not only get the contents of the treasure box but also the resources of these three people. A huge profit. Was their team finally going to rise?
Could Jiang Hui and the others let them have their way? Although they hadn’t figured out the exact situation yet, there was one thing they had already realized: the box sliding toward them was a good item.
Naturally, they had no choice but to… take it!
