Chapter 59: Chapter 54
Although underground heroes like Eraser Night don't have official licenses, they've done more good than harm. In fact, the general public's opinion of them is surprisingly positive. Midoriya scratched his head nervously. "The public really respects Eraser Night. He's known for helping people even without recognition."
Akira smirked. It seemed Eraser Night's actions hadn't gone unnoticed. Even if pro heroes looked down on him, the people saw him as an example of true heroism. That alone made his work worthwhile.
"Alright, wait here. I'll go find him," Akira instructed. He then walked towards a shadowy alley, leaving Midoriya to wait.
Midoriya tried to steady his nerves. He had thought Akira was only taking him to the underground venue to observe. Meeting the infamous Eraser Night was entirely unexpected. The hero's reputation for operating in secrecy and with a strong quirk added to his intimidation.
Shaking off his nervousness, Midoriya reminded himself why he was here. He had decided to push past his limits and get stronger. There was no turning back now.
A voice interrupted his thoughts. "Are you the Midoriya kid Akira mentioned?"
Midoriya turned to see a man in a dark cloak and a mask resembling Superman's.
"You're Eraser Night?" Midoriya asked cautiously, his heart pounding.
"That's right," the figure said in a low voice. "Akira asked me to take care of you. But let me make one thing clear—I only help those who have the potential to grow. If you don't have what it takes, I won't waste my time. Do you understand?"
Midoriya straightened up and replied firmly, "I understand, Eraser Night. I won't let you down."
Akira smirked behind his mask. Midoriya's determination was evident. "Follow me," he said.
---
The underground venue was guarded by two burly men at the entrance. They recognized Akira and let them in without question. Inside, the dimly lit passage was lined with flickering candles, giving it an eerie atmosphere.
Midoriya's unease grew as they descended deeper. At the bottom of the stairs, he saw two intimidating guards by another door.
"Scared?" Akira asked coldly.
"No… no," Midoriya stammered, though his voice betrayed his fear.
Once inside the venue, Midoriya's nerves eased slightly. Bright lights illuminated a large crowd cheering around a central ring where two fighters battled brutally.
Akira led Midoriya to meet Hirayama Yuda, an overseer at the venue. "How are the upcoming matches? Any strong opponents in the lineup?" Akira asked.
Before answering, Hirayama scrutinized Midoriya. "You're a U.A. High School student?"
"Yes, sir," Midoriya replied respectfully, unsure of what to expect.
"U.A. always produces talents," Hirayama said seriously. "But let me be clear—once you step into that ring, your life is your own responsibility. No one will save you if you're losing. Understand?"
Midoriya hesitated as he watched the fight in progress. One fighter struck a devastating blow, killing his opponent instantly. The crowd roared for the victor, ignoring the lifeless body on the ground.
Hirayama pointed at the ring. "See that? If you step into the ring, your life and death are entirely in your hands."
Midoriya swallowed hard. He felt the weight of Hirayama's words.
Akira placed a hand on Midoriya's shoulder. "Don't worry. You're stronger than you think. This is about learning how to adapt and overcome."
After a moment of silence, Midoriya clenched his fists and said, "Eraser Night, I'll take the challenge."
Hirayama smirked. "Good. Let's get you signed up."
---
Midoriya followed Akira to the registration desk. His hands trembled as he signed the waiver, acknowledging the risk of death.
"Your opponent is Hota Shanda," Akira said, handing Midoriya a card. "His quirk is fat accumulation."
Midoriya frowned. "Fat accumulation? I've never heard of that quirk before…"
"Then this will be a good lesson," Akira said with a grin.
An hour later, Midoriya's name was called. His nerves returned, but Akira's encouragement kept him focused.
"Show them what you're made of," Akira said, clapping him on the shoulder.
Taking a deep breath, Midoriya stepped into the ring, determined to prove himself.
