The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide

Episode 61: Fog

In the room covered in thick fog once again, I raised Ignido and kept my guard up around me.

(As expected, I can’t use detection-type magic.)

First, I tried to see if using detection magic was possible after clearing the fog, but as expected, it was impossible.

“Fiera. Do you know the enemy’s position?”

“No problem.”

It seemed Fiera sensed the position of the white whale, continuing to gaze straight ahead as if indicating its location.

“It’s coming. Behind us.”

As Fiera said this, a gigantic white object rushed toward us from behind, and we jumped to the sides to avoid it.

“It really appeared out of nowhere from behind.”

Just a moment ago, Fiera had been looking straight ahead, yet the white whale attacked from behind. It was way too fast to have moved that quickly.

“It must be a type of teleportation magic.”

There was no other explanation for it suddenly appearing behind us with such a huge body, and more importantly, if the giant body moved, the flow of the fog should have changed, yet it did not change at all.

“Then, I wonder if there’s a condition for that teleportation… Seems like there probably is.”

If there were no conditions, it should have been able to escape into the sky immediately when I burned it with Azure Flame.

However, in reality, even after the fog cleared, it didn’t flee and was simply burned by the flames.

“Well then. What could the condition be… Whoa!”

As I pondered various possibilities while remaining vigilant, a white fin suddenly swung towards me, trying to knock me away.

I used Ignido to deflect the attack, and the fin veered off course.

“Hmm. Thanks to my battle with Build, my movements have improved compared to before.”

Realizing that I could now deflect attacks more easily than I could before, I closed my eyes and tried to sense the now vanished white whale in the fog.

(Found you.)

It seemed that all the time I spent training my sensing and spatial awareness abilities while blindfolded on the way to this room paid off, as I was able to somewhat grasp where the white whale was and what movements it was making.

“Now it’s with Fiera.”

It appeared that after I deflected its attack, it went straight for Fiera.

“Well, it’s boring just getting beaten up. Let’s take the offensive this time.”

Deciding to take the initiative, I readied Ignido at my waist, lowered my stance, kicked off the ground, and rushed toward the white whale.

Then, I enveloped Ignido in flames and swung my sword upward from below.

“Huh?”

But for some reason, I felt no sensation of cutting the white whale with my sword, and it had completely shifted its presence to a different location.

“What’s going on?”

Just moments ago, its aura had been right in front of me, and it should have been there on the trajectory of my sword swing, yet there simply was no sensation of cutting it, nor was the white whale present.

“Fiera. When you were fighting alone, did you feel the impact of your blows?”

“I did.”

“Hmm.”

Thinking about the difference between Fiera’s battle and mine, it was clear that she was fighting head-on, while my attack was an ambush.

(Shall I give it a try?)

“Fiera. I want to confirm something, so could you attract its attention?”

“Understood.”

Setting up a hypothesis, I decided to recreate the same situation as before.

As I left Fiera’s side, she attacked the white whale head-on.

Due to the fog, I couldn’t see its form, but as I sensed the sounds of battle and impacts between Fiera and the whale, I stealthily moved behind the white whale.

Then, I positioned Ignido sideways and executed a horizontal slash while enveloping it in flames.

“Just as I thought.”

However, just like before, there was no sensation of cutting, and once again, the white whale’s presence appeared at a distance.

“El. Did you figure anything out?”

“Yeah. To land an attack on it, we need to make it recognize our attacks. Its ability is likely related to something like a mistification that allows it to blend into the fog. By mistifying itself, it can suddenly appear elsewhere, responding to surprise attacks.”

That would explain why I had felt no sensation when swinging my sword and why it suddenly appeared elsewhere.

“That’s troublesome.”

“But on the flip side, if we make it recognize our attacks, we’ll hit. Now, whether it can mistify on its own… I think it can.”

Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense for it to suddenly appear behind us when we hadn’t even attacked.

“Well, now that we understand its ability and how to deal with it, all that’s left is to take it down accordingly.”

“Right. A frontal assault. I’m looking forward to it.”

Fiera said, wagging her tail excitedly as if she had found a new toy.

“You know the size of the room, right?”

“No problem.”

“Then I’ll take the right.”

“I’ll take the left.”

After deciding our roles, we divided and vanished into the fog.

“Let’s start with me.”

As I moved to the right side of my position, the white whale charged at me.

“Haha! It’s so predictable!”

I crouched down and sprinted across the ground, dodging the whale’s headbutt, slipped beneath it, and plunged Ignido into its side, slicing toward its tail fin.

The white whale let out a cry that resembled a scream from the intense pain of having its belly torn, then it mistified to escape.

“Next, it’s headed toward Fiera.”

Our plan was quite simple; we split from the center of the room and attacked the white whale from the front as it approached each of us.

This was to avoid giving it the chance to mistify away from our attacks or escape to the edges of the room, allowing it time to rest.

Although it seemed like a brute-force strategy, we determined that this approach would be more effective against this boss.

As expected, when the white whale returned from Fiera’s direction, it was bleeding from its right eye, having lost one eye in the process.

“Yikes.”

I didn’t know what specifically Fiera had done, but I followed her lead and targeted the fin on its right side.

From that point on, as the white whale alternated between me and Fiera, we continued our relentless assault without giving it a moment’s respite.

The white whale, showing its determination as a final boss, attempted to counter our attacks, but unfortunately for it, its large size enabled it to have many blind spots, making it unable to keep up with our speed and assaults.

I felt a bit of sympathy for the white whale, which was reduced to a one-sided beating, but we did not stop our attacks.

“Huh? It’s stopped.”

The white whale, sensing its limits, finally halted its movements at a point exactly between me and Fiera.

It seemed Fiera noticed this too, as I sensed she was moving toward the whale.

“Well then, shall we finish this?”

I lowered the tip of Ignido as I approached the white whale, enveloping it in blue flames, and slashed upward at its neck.

From the opposite side, Fiera must have swung down a palm strike wrapped in fighting spirit at the same spot, as my slash met hers right at the center of its neck, causing the whale’s thick neck to fall.

Its floating body slowly began to disappear as it dropped to the ground, leaving only the magic stone and items behind before completely vanishing.

With the white whale defeated, the fog that had filled the room dissipated, leaving only us and the still unconscious Viola and her companions.

“Well then. Let’s see what dropped.”

After putting the white whale’s magic stone into my magic bag, I picked up the items that had fallen beside it.

“Can we use this?”

“Yeah. Apparently, it’s a robe-type item called ‘Mist Hermit.’

Its effect seems to almost completely erase the presence of the wearer, rendering them undetectable by detection-type magic. However, it doesn’t seem to stop abilities like Fiera’s natural instincts, but just preventing detection magic is pretty impressive.”

“I see. Sounds really powerful.”

“Let’s share this one.”

“Got it.”

When I mentioned that I would share the item, for some reason, Fiera wagged her tail joyfully.

(That said, Viola managed to defeat this thing all by herself back in the day. Reflecting on it makes me realize how strong she really was.)

Thinking about how I had met Viola in my past life, her single-handedly taking down the white whale while blindfolded made it understandable that I hadn’t been able to match her then.

“Alright. Now that we’ve defeated the boss, let’s head out. But before that…”

Knowing we couldn’t just leave Viola and her companions unconscious in this place, Fiera and I began discussing what to do next.
