Chapter 37 - Killing Pigs 1
On the twelfth day of the survival game, at 8:30 in the morning, Mai Dongzi reached the edge of the forest.
She had already walked six or seven kilometers towards the forest the previous day. Thus, after sunrise, she jogged in the direction of the forest and arrived at its edge in less than an hour and a half.
Standing at the edge of the forest, Mai Dongzi looked at the trees that were both familiar and strange, feeling a mix of emotions.
The climate of Water Blue Star, two thousand years later, has become much milder. Most of the temperatures are similar to those before the apocalypse, with extreme weather now rarely occurring.
For example, the sandstorm yesterday was unprecedented according to the information from the Water Blue Star garrison. However, such sandstorms or storms were common when the apocalypse first began over two thousand years ago.
At that time, there were even more terrifying storms. When such storms occurred, not only humans but even buildings on the ground would suffer.
The trees in the forest are now mutated wood, unlike two thousand years ago when only a few trees were mutated.
It is estimated that during the two thousand years of apocalypse, non-mutated trees were either eliminated by the harsh environment or displaced by mutated plants, as mutated plants had very vigorous life forces.
Tree mutations simply made them more suited to the temperature. Apart from becoming sturdier, their essence didn’t change much. However, after more than two thousand years of evolution, they have changed quite a bit compared to the non-mutated plants from back then.
As Mai Dongzi looked at these familiar yet strange trees and recalled the events from over two thousand years ago, she felt unsettled.
However, her moment of distress lasted only a few seconds. Remembering her current role, Mai Dongzi composed herself and quickly walked into the forest.
At the edge of the forest, the trees were sparse, with dense underbrush between them, making the terrain difficult to traverse. Mai Dongzi had to use her dagger to clear a path.
Perhaps because this part of the forest was close to the edge of the desert, the air in the forest was not dry but also not humid, and the ground was quite dry.
After walking about half a kilometer in, the trees became denser, with only sparse light filtering through and the underbrush gradually decreasing until it disappeared.
Mai Dongzi didn’t plan to venture deep into the forest immediately. Instead, she intended to find a suitable spot near the forest’s edge to set up a temporary camp. She searched for a suitable location while using her mental energy to assist.
Unexpectedly, she came across a mutated pig, a level-three mutant. Upon seeing it, her eyes immediately lit up.
The energy contained in the meat of a level-three mutant beast was beneficial to her. Mai Dongzi had almost finished the two level-three mutant wolves she hunted in the desert oasis.
But what excited Mai Dongzi was not just the energy; it was the excellent taste of the mutated pig’s meat, which made her crave it.
In the forest, most of the mutated pigs were wild boars, which were already difficult to handle before mutation and became even more formidable afterward.
Mai Dongzi hadn’t yet figured out how to kill the pig when it noticed her and charged at her, trying to impale her with its long tusks.
Mai Dongzi quickly dodged, and the mutated pig, missing its target, turned and charged at her again with surprising agility and speed for its large size.
As Mai Dongzi ran in slow motion, the livestream viewers saw her struggling to keep up with the mutated beast. The pig’s long tusks were about to pierce her back, causing some viewers to shout in panic…
In the critical moment, Mai Dongzi suddenly darted to the right. The unbalanced mutated pig crashed into a large tree, its tusks embedding into the tree trunk. The tree, over a meter in diameter and fifty to sixty meters high, swayed violently, shedding many leaves.
The thick-skinned, tough pig grunted and seemed dazed from the impact, clearly suffering from the collision.
Mai Dongzi turned around and charged forward, stabbing and slashing with her dagger, wounding the pig’s trotter on the left.
The mutated pig let out a loud, miserable scream, forcibly pulling its tusks from the tree trunk, and charged at Mai Dongzi again, still trying to pierce her with its tusks.
When Mai Dongzi struck the mutated pig with her dagger, she felt that the situation wasn’t as good as she expected. The pig’s hide was too rough, and the damage the dagger could inflict was less than she had estimated. Killing this level-three mutated pig with just a dagger seemed difficult.
This injury was not severe for the mutated pig, but it was enough to enrage it, and it relentlessly chased Mai Dongzi.
With her level-five warrior strength, Mai Dongzi’s running speed was faster than the mutated pig’s, making it not too hard for her to escape.
But she wanted to eat pork.
However, she didn’t have a better weapon. The dagger was too short to cut off the pig’s head, and slashing its throat was impossible because of the thick and tough neck. She couldn’t guarantee a clean cut to the blood vessels.
Especially in the pig’s enraged state, before she could even approach the pig’s neck, she was injured by its tusks.
Therefore, Mai Dongzi decided to use the previous tactic: evade the mutated pig and find an opportunity to lure it into hitting a tree, then stab it while it was dazed, and eventually wear it down to death.
The viewers in the live stream saw Mai Dongzi running fast at times and slow at others. They no longer felt the previous tension, only observing the mutated beast’s stupidity in chasing her, not understanding her motives.
Sure enough, not long after, the mutated beast fell for the trap again and crashed into a tree.
This tree wasn’t as sturdy as the previous one, but with a diameter of half a meter, it was still broken by the mutated pig. The viewers in the live stream were astonished by the beast’s strength.
Mai Dongzi naturally took the opportunity to strike the mutated pig again. The pig, in pain, became even more enraged and charged at her once more.
Thus, under Mai Dongzi’s guidance, the mutated pig repeatedly crashed into trees, knocking down quite a few.
Every time this happened, Mai Dongzi would take the chance to stab the pig, always targeting its front hooves.
Even using a blunt knife to kill a pig, with repeated strikes, the pig’s injuries gradually worsened, leaving two trails of blood as it ran.
By evening, Deputy Chen commented to Prince Arthur, “These mutated beasts have tough hides and flesh. Although their level isn’t high, they are very difficult to deal with. Our soldiers need to target their vital spots to kill them with a single shot. It seems Miss Lucy has memorized the information we provided.”
After two attempts, the viewers of the livestream felt that Mai Dongzi’s strategy was time-consuming but effective.
After being stabbed by Mai Dongzi again, the mutated pig, sensing something was wrong, turned around and tried to escape.
