Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Sarutobi Hiruzen's Profound "Repentance"

The murmurs and rising tensions in the audience were impossible to miss. As curses and insults toward Konoha's high-ranking officials grew louder, Sarutobi Hiruzen stood firm on the stage, his expression calm, even as he faced the backlash.

An ANBU operative standing beside him whispered, "Hokage-sama, perhaps you should say a few words to appease the crowd. If this goes on, the villagers might lose faith in Konoha's leadership."

Sarutobi Hiruzen smiled faintly and replied in a low voice, "Let them vent their emotions. After all, it is we, the leadership, who failed them. This is a punishment we must endure."

The ANBU hesitated but eventually nodded. "Understood, Hokage-sama."

---

In the crowd, the mood was turbulent, with villagers and even a few shinobi angrily voicing their disdain for Danzo's actions and criticizing the village's leadership.

"Danzo's crimes were monstrous!" one shouted.

"He shamed the village and hurt the people who trusted him!"

"This isn't just Danzo's fault—it reflects on all the higher-ups who allowed it!"

The cacophony of harsh words made their way to Hiruzen's ears, but his demeanor remained composed. Internally, however, he was relieved. This storm of anger, though fierce, was directed entirely at Danzo—a man who could no longer defend himself.

Hiruzen sighed inwardly. This chapter of Danzo is finally closed, he thought. And with it, my hands remain clean.

While Danzo had indeed committed unspeakable crimes, Hiruzen had successfully deflected blame for his own involvement or negligence. The truth about the Uchiha clan's downfall, while tied to his decisions, was now conveniently shifted onto Danzo's shoulders.

The next step was critical: his performance of guilt and repentance.

---

As the audience's anger began to plateau, Sarutobi Hiruzen raised his hand, gesturing for silence. Gradually, the murmurs subsided, and all eyes turned to the Hokage. His face was filled with sorrow, his voice heavy with regret as he began to speak.

"Danzo was my senior advisor. He committed these grievous crimes under my very nose, and yet I failed to notice. For this, the blame lies not only with him but also with me."

The audience fell silent, taken aback by his unexpected self-criticism.

Hiruzen continued, "If I had acted sooner, if I had been more vigilant, perhaps Shisui would still be alive. Perhaps Hashirama's cells would not have been defiled, and the Uchiha clan might have been spared."

The crowd listened intently as the Hokage's voice grew heavier with emotion.

"I have heard your voices, your anger, and your pain," he said, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "And I feel it, too. I have failed you as your Hokage. I failed to protect the people who trusted me. For this, I am deeply sorry."

A few villagers began to murmur softly among themselves, their anger replaced by surprise and pity.

"As a leader," Hiruzen continued, his voice cracking, "how can I continue to hold this title when I have allowed such atrocities to occur under my leadership? Today, I am prepared to relinquish my position as Hokage as a gesture of my profound regret."

The crowd gasped in unison.

"Father, what are you saying?" Sarutobi Asuma called out from the audience, his voice tinged with shock.

Hiruzen shook his head solemnly, his shoulders sagging as though burdened by the weight of his guilt. "I do not deserve to lead. My failures have cost too much. The village deserves better than me…"

For a moment, a heavy silence hung in the air. Then, as if on cue, a wave of voices rose from the crowd.

"No, Hokage-sama, you can't step down!" one villager cried.

"The village needs you! There's no one else as capable and wise as you!"

"Hokage-sama, this isn't your fault—it was Danzo! Please don't punish yourself for his sins!"

The pleas grew louder, with many villagers kneeling in earnest supplication. Even among the shinobi present, there were murmurs of agreement.

Tears rolled down Hiruzen's cheeks as he wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "You… you truly wish for me to remain as your Hokage?"

"Yes!" the crowd shouted in unison, their voices ringing out like a unified prayer.

"Very well," Hiruzen said, his voice trembling. "If you truly trust me, I will remain in this position. I promise you, as long as I am Hokage, I will ensure such events never happen again. Danzo's crimes will not be repeated. This I vow to you!"

Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd.

---

With the people's trust reaffirmed, Hiruzen straightened his posture and addressed them once more. "As for the Uchiha clan, who suffered so greatly because of Danzo's actions, I will see to it that they are compensated generously."

Murmurs of approval rippled through the audience.

"I will announce the details of this compensation tomorrow," Hiruzen said. "This is not enough to undo the harm that was done, but it is a step toward justice—a step toward atonement for the village's mistakes."

The villagers nodded, many moved to tears by the Hokage's heartfelt words.

"Our Hokage is truly remarkable," one whispered.

"Konoha is blessed to have such a compassionate leader," another agreed.

Hiruzen smiled faintly. "Now, return to your daily lives. Let us move forward together, as a village united. Let the past be a lesson, not a burden."

---

As the crowd dispersed, Hiruzen's expression shifted. The sorrow and guilt that had seemed so genuine moments ago were replaced by cold calculation. Turning to the ANBU team beside him, he gave a sharp order: "Prepare yourselves. We're heading to the Uchiha compound."

"Yes, Hokage-sama."

Hiruzen's mind raced with thoughts as he walked toward the Uchiha district. He had already decided how to "compensate" them—a gesture that would seem magnanimous on the surface but would ultimately serve his own agenda.

"If you wish to destroy something, first make it flourish," he muttered under his breath.

As the fireworks celebrating Haruto's wedding continued to light up the Uchiha district's sky, Hiruzen's smile turned sinister.

"Enjoy your moment, Haruto. Your time is running out."
