Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Alliance
Nighttime.
Lu Jun and Lu Mei stood in front of the landmark Silver Trade Building. This hundred-meter-tall skyscraper, with its crystalline glass surface, stood like a lone silver sword towering over the brightly lit city.
At the top of the building, one could take in the entire city of Bo and gaze down upon the world below.
Normally, this place was bustling with people, with streams of light illuminating its every corner. However, tonight, it was dim and lifeless, with sparse foot traffic. This was because most of Bo City's influential figures were gathered at the Mu Family Manor. Moreover, it was a holiday for students, and office workers were also enjoying their day off.
Not just the Silver Trade Building, but much of Bo City had come to a standstill. The entire city seemed to be on a collective break.
This was precisely why Lu Jun had chosen this moment to make his move. The streets were vast and interconnected, allowing for quick movement and unrestrained combat without the risk of harming civilians.
Then, he heard a loud and carefree voice behind him:
"Old Lu, so this is where you've been hiding! You're really something, ditching us to avoid watching me thrash Yu Ang!"
Turning around, Lu Jun saw Mo Fan approaching with a knowing expression. With a calm tone, he said,
"I believed you would win against Yu Ang, so I came here to wait for the victor at the Holy Spring—that victor being you."
Mo Fan understood but couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. "You're such a poser," he remarked.
Nearby, Yang Zuohe, the middle-aged president of the Magic Association, observed Lu Jun with a peculiar expression. He was well aware of Lu Jun's potential, which wasn't any less than Mo Fan's. Considering Lu Mei's cultivation level, which far surpassed his own, Lu Jun could easily qualify for the Holy Spring but had given up the opportunity.
Of course, now that Mo Fan's innate dual-element talent had been revealed, it left Lu Jun far behind, making him the most suitable choice for the spring.
Lu Mei nodded politely to Yang Zuohe, who returned the gesture with a smile. However, he couldn't help but feel puzzled about why this pair of siblings had come to the Silver Trade Building.
Seeing Yang Zuohe also present, Lu Jun patted Mo Fan on the shoulder with a meaningful smile and said,
"Go on, enjoy your Holy Spring soak."
Lu Jun had no interest in the Holy Spring. Its energy had already diminished significantly and was on the verge of depletion, making it useless for someone of his intermediate level. Furthermore, it attracted too much trouble, especially from the Black Vatican.
It was better to let Mo Fan follow his original path and remain the primary target of the Black Vatican. If his calculations were correct, Mo Fan's dual-element talent had already been exposed.
While Lu Jun felt a bit bad for adopting the "better you than me" mindset, Mo Fan's tenacity was undeniable. Even Salan, that future mother-in-law figure, had shown mercy to him in the early stages. Such luck wouldn't extend to himself.
This opportunity was best left to Mo Fan, to draw the fire while he played it safe from the sidelines.
"See you later," Mo Fan said, brimming with confidence. "When I come out, I'll be an Intermediate Mage. Old Lu, then you can call me 'Big Bro,' and I'll take care of you."
Lu Jun smirked. "You'll have plenty of chances to call me 'Dad' later."
Soon after, Mo Fan was taken to the Holy Spring by Yang Zuohe.
Not long after, a valiant female guard emerged from the building. Lin Yuxin waved and smiled warmly.
"Hello, sorry for the wait. We had to prepare for activating the Holy Spring today. Why aren't you two at the Mu Family Manor enjoying the banquet? What brings you to this little place of mine?"
There was no doubt that the Holy Spring lay beneath the Silver Trade Building. Even on holidays, the guards wouldn't let down their vigilance.
Lu Jun adopted a serious expression. "I came here to tell you something and to ask for your help."
"Huh?" Lin Yuxin tilted her head, confused. "What is it? As long as it doesn't go against my principles, I'll do my best to help."
"Wait a moment," Lu Jun said, glancing at his watch. "We're still waiting for one more person."
Lin Yuxin was puzzled but remained patient.
Suddenly, the sound of high heels echoed in the quiet streets. From the shadows emerged Tang Yue, her tall, slender figure exuding charm.
She was dressed in a professional outfit: a white blouse accentuating her curves, a black skirt outlining her shapely hips, and black stockings highlighting her long, graceful legs. She looked like a queen of the night, or perhaps a black orchid blooming in darkness.
Tang Yue approached with graceful steps, her gaze sweeping over the group. When she saw Lu Mei and Lin Yuxin, she looked surprised. However, she quickly focused on Lu Jun, her expression serious.
"Who exactly are you? And how do you know I'm a member of the Judgment Court?"
Tang Yue had been keeping an eye on Lu Jun since high school, impressed by his water magic mastery in his first year and his commanding presence during the Snow Mountain mission in his second year.
She had planned to leave Bo City tonight and return to Hangzhou after failing to find any traces of the Black Vatican for two and a half years.
Yet just as she was about to leave, she received a mysterious phone call that exposed her identity. Her hidden status, carefully maintained for so long, had been discovered, leaving her both shocked and alarmed.
Despite her caution, she had chosen to come to the Silver Trade Building to meet this person, suspecting they meant no harm.
"Relax, Teacher Tang," Lu Jun said, shrugging. "I'm just a local kid from Bo City, with no ties to any other organizations. As for how I figured out you were from the Judgment Court… well, you made it too obvious. I just guessed."
He couldn't help but rant a little. A Judgment Court member, claiming to be undercover, had made herself a glaring focus by parachuting into the school as a mysterious and stunning teacher, attracting attention from all sides.
In games like Werewolf or Goose Goose Duck, a role meant to stay hidden had instead turned into the center of attention, with everyone scrutinizing her every move. How could people not figure it out?
Still, he was the "Sheriff of Justice," with sharp eyes capable of identifying all the wolves in the pack. His deduction was spot-on.
Tang Yue blushed slightly at his remark, realizing he had a point. She tried to maintain her composure. "So, what do you want from me?"
"I've discovered traces of the Black Vatican," Lu Jun said, his tone serious. "Their target seems to be the Holy Spring and possibly the destruction of Bo City."
His words shocked both Tang Yue and Lin Yuxin. The latter finally understood why she had been called here.
"Wait a second," Tang Yue said, her brow furrowed. "I've been investigating for so long without finding anything. Why do you say the Black Vatican is here?"
Lu Jun smiled faintly and turned to Lin Yuxin.
"You've noticed something unusual underground, haven't you? Monsters digging their way to the Holy Spring and even stealing some of its water."
Lin Yuxin froze for a moment before replying, "How do you know that? Although we sealed it off, I've always suspected there was more to it."
Lu Jun then laid out all the evidence he had gathered, piecing together the truth. The information complemented what Tang Yue and Lin Yuxin already knew, forming a complete picture. They were 70–80% convinced.
Tang Yue sighed. "I came to this city following a lead, but I found nothing after three years. I never imagined the higher-ups had covered it up, and the Black Vatican was operating in the underground tunnels—something I hadn't considered."
"I'll report this to the Judgment Court immediately. In a few days, we can organize a joint operation to sweep Bo City."
"Don't," Lu Jun quickly interjected. "I plan to take action tonight."
