Versatile Mage: Starting with the White Tiger Pendant

Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Destroying the Underground Tunnels

Tang Yue asked, puzzled, "So soon?!"

"To avoid alerting the enemy," Lu Jun replied without mentioning the traitors in the Hangzhou Trial Council. Those individuals held positions of power, making it too difficult to incriminate them. Instead, he said, "I suspect their actions will take place within the next few days. We can't wait; we must strike first."

Standing nearby, Lin Yuxin took a deep breath and asked, "What do you plan to do? I'll back you up anytime."

Lu Jun unhesitatingly took the lead, saying, "Seal off all the underground tunnels leading outside the city. We must act quickly, and I've already identified the relevant locations."

"That would require sufficient manpower and authorization to act within the city," Lin Yuxin said calmly. "Right now, we can trust Yang Zuohe from the Magic Association and my guard team."

Decisively, the four entered the Silver Trade Building to meet Yang Zuohe. Although Tang Yue felt the plan was rushed, as a Trial Council member, she displayed decisiveness. She believed in taking action, even at the risk of being wrong, rather than doing nothing.

Yang Zuohe had just arranged for Mo Fan to undergo the baptism of the Holy Spring when he heard the group's words, his expression turning astonished.

Nearby, Guard Captain Liang spoke up, "Aren't you being overly sensitive?"

Hearing this, Lin Yuxin frowned and said, "Isn't this enough evidence? Recently, the underground chamber housing the Holy Spring was almost breached. Doesn't that warrant vigilance?"

"At the end of the day, all you have is speculation—"

Captain Liang tried to argue further but was interrupted on the spot by Lu Jun. Feeling exasperated, Lu Jun thought, It's no wonder Lin Yuxin and Tang Yue trust me more. They each hold some clues, and our relationships—whether as savior or student—foster easier belief. But these seasoned officials? They err on the side of caution.

"I'll act first. If I'm wrong, I'll take full responsibility. But if I'm right, you'll owe me compensation tenfold," Lu Jun said impatiently.

He wasn't here for their permission; he was here to notify them. At critical moments, bold action must prevail.

Tang Yue fully supported him, revealing her identity on the spot. With an icy tone, she declared, "I am a member of the Hangzhou Trial Council. I am now temporarily taking over the Bo City Magic Association."

"Making a student bear the responsibility—aren't you ashamed? I'll take full responsibility. My uncle is the Hangzhou Chief Justice!"

Those present were slightly stunned. Yang Zuohe, a man of action, said solemnly, "Very well. The Magic Association authorizes this operation. I also trust Ms. Tang Yue. Please identify the locations."

The three women looked to Lu Jun. Calmly, he requested a map, circled the key points, and said, "These locations—all must be sealed to prevent outside monsters from invading. At least mid-level mages should be deployed."

After further discussion, the group split up to act. Tang Yue, with her Shadow and Fire magic; Lu Mei, with her Wind and Earth magic; and Lin Yuxin, also a mid-level Water mage, could individually destroy the tunnels.

Both Tang Yue and Lin Yuxin instructed Lu Jun, "You stay here; you're just a student."

Unbeknownst to them, Lu Jun was already a dual-element mid-level mage and had mastered mid-level spells.

"Yes, I should stay in the Sliver Trade Building," Lu Jun replied calmly.

This wasn't for his safety. In fact, destroying the tunnels was the safest part of the plan, as the enemy wouldn't have time to respond before it was done.

Instead, he felt instinctively that the Black Vatican would launch one final, desperate counterattack. They would inevitably deploy heavy forces to storm this place and forcibly seize the Holy Spring. Lu Jun intended to test the waters against the Black Vatican and defend Bo City!

As he had thought three years ago, one day, he would reverse his fate. Every tragedy could be shattered with power, leading to a perfect ending.

A mage's duty is to protect the people and slay monsters! Though Lu Jun couldn't yet fully realize this, his heart was already set on this path.

Soon, only Yang Zuohe, Guard Captain Liang, and Lu Jun remained at the scene, along with seven or eight mid-level mages stationed at the Yin Trade Building.

Yang Zuohe suggested, "Let's head to the rooftop of the Yin Trade Building. From there, we can oversee the entire Bo City and wait for the signal."

The night wind howled as Lu Jun stood at this vantage point for the first time, overlooking Bo City. The view was expansive, and his chest swelled with determination. His fists clenched as he felt a mix of tension and anticipation.

The three waited patiently for a long time until they saw thick smoke rising in a certain part of Bo City. Then, with a "whoosh," a flare shot into the sky—a special signal.

Lu Jun's heart surged with joy, and he whispered, "That's the underground tunnel at Mingwen Girls' High School. My sister succeeded."

Soon, the radio crackled with a familiar, soothing voice from Lu Mei: "The B-point tunnel has been destroyed and completely sealed."

One after another, smoke signals and flares rose in various locations, bringing good news in quick succession.

Standing nearby, Yang Zuohe wasn't idle either. Using the Magic Association's authority, he broadcast a message citywide:

"Attention, citizens: tonight, a special exercise is being conducted. Please remain indoors and do not wander outside. Any unusual sounds are nothing to worry about."

Everyone in Bo City heard the announcement. Though puzzled and curious, they placed their trust in the state. As a result, they stayed indoors obediently.

Afterward, Yang Zuohe set down the radio and smiled wryly at Lu Jun. "Tonight is truly insane. Based solely on your words, we've mobilized the Trial Council, the guard unit, and even myself."

"You won't regret it," Lu Jun said calmly. "By tomorrow, you'll be grateful."

Mu Manor

The city's prominent figures were still present, enjoying themselves. However, Mu He excused himself with an apology and led the defeated Yu Ang away.

Once they were alone in a backroom, Mu He's usually gentle demeanor changed. His expression turned sinister and ruthless as he glared coldly at Yu Ang.

"You useless fool! Do you realize how much trouble your failure has caused for the Black Vatican's plans?"

"Spare me, sir! Just give me one more chance!" Yu Ang immediately knelt, sweat pouring down his face. He knew all too well the Black Vatican's punishments for failure—worse than death itself! He could be transformed alive into a Black Beast Demon.

"Ha," Mu He sneered with disgust. Just as he was about to speak further, he heard Yang Zuohe's citywide broadcast. His expression shifted to one of suspicion and unease.

Moments later, his communicator buzzed with a report from a Black Vatican member: "Bad news, Decon. The underground tunnels we built throughout Bo City have been discovered and are being destroyed one by one by the Magic Association."

Mu He, recalling the earlier broadcast, paled and cursed, "Damn it! How did those idiots in the Magic Association find out?"

More bad news poured in, reporting the destruction of over half the tunnels within minutes.

Mu He's anger surged, but his years of leadership allowed him to suppress it. Taking a deep breath, he calmly instructed over the communicator, "Notify the Pontiff to begin the operation ahead of schedule."

"We've prepared for so long, and the Rain Summoner sent by Lady Salan is already in place. The arrow is on the string; it must be released."

"The tunnels cannot be salvaged in time; they'll all be destroyed before we can respond. But our primary goal isn't destroying Bo City or even the Holy Spring. It's conducting an experiment."

His tone grew darker as he commanded, "Once the monster hordes outside the city succeed in drawing attention, you will move in with full force. Launch an all-out assault on the Silver Trade Building and attempt to seize the Holy Spring."

Finally, Mu He smashed the communicator in fury, his chest heaving with rage. What should have been a nearly foolproof plan had been completely derailed.

Turning to the kneeling Yu Ang, Mu He kicked him hard, sending him flying. He wished he could act personally, but his responsibilities to a larger mission—Lady Salan's grand plan—took precedence.
