Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Inheritance of Wizardry
After hearing Jolord's explanation, Richard understood the benefits of the secret realm. However, he realized such opportunities were more beneficial to seasoned wizards. They had the knowledge to discern what was valuable. As apprentices who hadn't fully absorbed their teachers' teachings, they might enter a treasure trove and leave empty-handed.
"Let's set aside the secret realm for now, Richard. I called you here for another reason," Jolord said.
He gave Chucks a knowing look, and Chucks, understanding immediately, left the laboratory.
Richard swallowed nervously, sensing the gravity of the moment.
"Richard, you've been my student for ten years. Passing this exam proves you're not just a bookworm," Jolord said, retrieving a crystal ball from a drawer.
"It's time to pass some things on to you."
Richard accepted the crystal ball with a sense of anticipation. As soon as his mind touched it, a torrent of complex information flowed into his brain.
"The previous lessons were basic knowledge every alchemy wizard teaches their students, differing mainly in the magical blueprints provided. But this knowledge is unlike anything before," Jolord continued.
Richard emerged from his daze, realizing the difference.
The information Jolord provided was a complete set of alchemical spells.
Alchemy spells aren't like elemental spells that can be drawn with runes. They aren't even spells in the traditional sense, better described as surgeries or techniques.
The spell Richard absorbed was known as the Body of Adaptation.
In essence, this spell enhances resistance to various elemental and physical damages and unlocks bodily potential.
Jolord led Richard to a laboratory filled with bizarre equipment.
There were iron maidens, incubation tanks, and pendulums resembling siege hammers—a strange mix for a lab.
"Since you're on the path of bloodline alchemy, the Body of Adaptation suits you well," Jolord said, gesturing to the various tools. "Whether you can master this spell depends on you."
Training for the Body of Adaptation is simple: continually subject the body to external stimuli to develop corresponding resistances.
For fire resistance, expose yourself to flames; for cold resistance, endure extreme cold.
Richard's face was stiff. The technique was potent; according to Jolord's crystal ball, mastering it could allow one to ignore thousands of energy levels in elemental damage and provide significant defense against blunt, piercing, and cutting physical harm.
It was a spell with immense potential.
But the training was, frankly, inhumane.
Jolord handed Richard a key.
"This training room is yours now. The equipment inside is sufficient for the Body of Adaptation training."
With that, Jolord left the lab, leaving Richard to ponder.
...
After some contemplation, Richard decided to begin training for the Body of Adaptation.
Gaining power has never been easy.
The training involves two steps: destruction and restoration.
Destruction is straightforward. The room's equipment offers everything from burning to freezing, with tools for blunt force and piercing damage.
Restoration is trickier. According to the crystal ball, before training, users must ingest or inject 100 milliliters of adaptation potion, the core of the Body of Adaptation.
After destruction, users must soak in a special container filled with restorative potion for an hour.
This cycle repeats.
While Jolord provided a training room, saving Richard the trouble of crafting equipment, he still needed to concoct the restorative potion, and its ingredients weren't cheap.
Currently, he could barely afford these expenses. But as the training progressed, costs would rise, eventually requiring different potions for varied training.
Richard pinched his brow. The sudden financial burden was a headache after living comfortably for so long.
"Should I increase production? Or launch a new product?"
Pondering his options, Richard returned to his room, flipping through his notes.
He remembered a potion formula he hadn't acquired.
After searching, Richard found his record.
"Physical Enhancement Potion, Library Code n7111."
Reading the note, Richard headed to the library.
In the section for encrypted notes, he found the journal containing the formula.
[Material: Unknown Wizard's Notes]
[Extractable Information: Physical Enhancement Potion Formula]
[Extraction Cost: 25 Mental Power]
[Extract?]
"A potion to enhance physique. How did I forget this?"
Richard slapped his forehead and checked out the journal.
Back in his room, he eagerly extracted the information.
With thirty-two points of mental power, the twenty-five-point cost was manageable for Richard.
As the familiar sensation of a hammer on his head passed, a white glow, recording the formula, appeared above the Miracle Furnace.
But as he absorbed it, Richard frowned.
"Egle Grass? I remember it's extinct in the wizard world."
The journal's author was from the wizard wars era, crafting formulas with then-available materials.
Post-war, countless species went extinct. While he could substitute auxiliary ingredients, Egle Grass was the core, and replacing it meant reinventing the formula.
"Do I have to rely on the secret realm?"
Richard looked at the formula, his expression uncertain.
After much thought, he burned the formula.
The secret realm was too unpredictable. Finding Egle Grass wasn't guaranteed, and even if found, today's environment couldn't sustain it.
"A false hope."
Leaning back, Richard considered other options.
He decided to comb through the encrypted notes, extracting all possible knowledge. However, this experience suggested most of it would serve as theoretical knowledge, with only a fraction being practically applicable.
Aside from the notes, he also needed to catch up on elemental knowledge. Thanks to his thriving potion business, he had exhausted Jolord's basic alchemy teachings, with advanced knowledge mostly relating to beast synthesis.
Richard had explored this path years ago but lacked the talent to produce anything noteworthy. Even if he pursued it, the results were unlikely to be significant.
After deliberation, Richard set two short-term goals.
First, train in the Body of Adaptation. Second, advance in elemental knowledge.
As for his future direction, Richard tentatively chose bloodline alchem
y. The alchemy formula he had would suffice until he became a wizard.
Once a wizard, he would have ample time to determine his path.
