Chapter 59 - Song Wanwan (2)
However, Song Wanwan seemed upset and reached out, slapping Song Ningxiang several times, hoping to teach her a lesson.
Just when Song Ningxiang could no longer bear it, the moment Song Wanwan raised her hand again, her wrist was hit hard by something.
Something fell, and it was an unshelled chestnut.
Song Wanwan winced in pain; the expression on her face twisted as she turned her head, wanting to see who had the courage to attack her.
As a result, when Song Wanwan turned her head, she saw Zang Ya standing at the door, walking inside.
The expression on Song Wanwan’s face froze for a moment, and she shouted, “Cousin!”
Zang Ya ignored her, first glancing at Song Ningxiang, who was crying miserably and being helped up by the maid. Then she looked at Song Wanwan in front of her and said, “Apologize to her.”
Song Wanwan and her family were in their current status because they pleased Old Madam Zang, but just because they pleased Old Madam Zang didn’t mean they thought Zang Ya was unimportant.
That year, Old Madam Zang was celebrating a festival at their home, and the grandchildren of the Song family had tried their best to please her, making Old Madam Zang constantly praise them for being sensible and obedient, laughing again and again.
Originally, the group was enjoying themselves and laughing when someone came over to stir up the fun, saying that Zang Ya had been injured outside. Immediately, Old Madam Zang rushed back without caring about anything.
At that time, Song Wanwan was accompanying Old Madam Zang and had made her the happiest; Old Madam Zang even said she would give her a jade as a meeting gift. However, because of Zang Ya’s incident, Old Madam Zang forgot about it and, in her haste, she was pushed to the ground.
At that moment, Song Wanwan felt angry and anxious, but she understood in her heart that for Old Madam Zang, the rest of the people might be just tools for amusement. They could be indulged when she was happy, but Zang Ya was her direct grandson, and that was real concern.
Moreover, Song Wanwan’s father and brother had told her that Old Madam Zang was getting older and might leave in near time. As a natal family, once they lost Old Madam Zang’s protection, they might be doomed. If they could gain Zang Ya’s favour by then, they might be able to keep some of their family’s wealth and prosperity.
Although Song Wanwan understood this, she still felt a bit unconvinced when facing Zang Ya, especially when she heard him speak so matter-of-factly.
“Cousin, this is not my fault. She was obviously offending me. Why should I apologize to her? Besides, what is her identity? She is just the daughter of a merchant. Why should I apologize to her?”
Zang Ya listened to her words but did not explain. He simply said forcefully, “I’ll say it again: you need to apologize to her.”
The Song family had long been a tyrant in this city, thanks to Old Madam Zang’s connections. Except for Song Wanwan, who had subdued herself in front of her father and brother, there was a lot of things she could do but admit her mistakes. At that moment, after hearing Zang Ya’s words, she knew how powerful he was but still took a gamble and refused to apologize to the merchant’s daughter.
“Why should I apologize? I didn’t do anything wrong!”
Zang Ya looked at Song Wanwan, who was so arrogant and refusing to listen, and thought there was nothing he could do to her. He asked again, “Are you really not going to apologize?”
“I won’t! Cousin, don’t be deceived by her weak appearance. The daughter of a merchant like her is the most shameless and the best at seducing men. She has seduced so many men—there is no shortage of them. You are still young; don’t let her fool you!”
Song Wanwan raised her chin, glancing disdainfully at Song Ningxiang, whose tears were rolling down her cheeks, a look of superiority in her eyes.
Song Ningxiang was shocked by how far Song Wanwan would go to bully others. Not only had she beaten her, but she was also here to humiliate her reputation.
Song Wanwan looked at Song Ningxiang with pride, thinking that if this girl was beaten by her, then she deserved it; there was nothing Song Ningxiang could do about it. But before she could revel in her perceived victory, she suddenly heard a sound breaking through the air, followed by a stinging pain on her cheek.
Before she could react, the other cheek was hit again.
After several strikes in quick succession, Song Wanwan’s cheeks were extremely red and swollen when Zang Ya finally stopped.
Coming back to her senses, Song Wanwan stared in disbelief at Zang Ya, who had put away the whip. “You hit me? You hit me for this bitch? I am your cousin! What is she?”
Zang Ya replied casually, “I just asked you to apologize, but you didn’t listen. I already gave you a chance.”
Having experienced such humiliation, Song Wanwan no longer cared about who was in front of her. She immediately lunged at Zang Ya, wanting to fight back.
However, before she could reach Zang Ya, an attendant following him stopped her.
Despite the attendant’s intervention, Song Wanwan still struggled desperately to get to Zang Ya.
At that moment, Zang Ya turned to those accompanying Song Wanwan. “Your young lady is not mentally stable. To prevent her from causing a scene outside, I’ll send someone to help you take her back.”
After saying that, Zang Ya gestured toward his attendants.
The two attendants understood and dragged Song Wanwan out, evidently heading toward the Song family.
The attendants following Song Wanwan saw this series of changes and realized that Zang Ya was a master they could not afford to offend. Hesitating for a moment, they followed along.
With Song Wanwan’s departure, the farce came to an end. Zang Ya approached Song Ningxiang and said to her maid, “Take your lady back!”
The maid hurriedly complied.
Song Ningxiang looked miserable. Even though she knew it was Zang Ya who had rescued her, she did not raise her head to look at him. She simply mumbled a thank you and left with the maids.
Just before stepping out of the threshold, Song Ningxiang looked back at Zang Ya, but he was focused on the attendant beside him, not even glancing her way.
Song Ningxiang pursed her lips, turned, and left, knowing she would never forget what had happened today.
An Yun stood next to Zang Ya, still recovering from the scene he had just witnessed.
He then saw the interaction between Zang Ya and Song Ningxiang and asked curiously, “Do you know her?”
An Yun felt that Zang Ya hadn’t wanted to help the girl initially but had changed his mind for some reason.
Zang Ya nodded without any hesitation. “Yes, I remembered that her brother sent a lot of things for that fat cat in our house. Moreover, the shortbread you like recently seems to have been sent by him.”
An Yun’s eyes lit up. “Is that shortbread from his family? I can’t quite taste what’s inside, but it is really delicious. It must have taken a lot of effort. Helping her is the right thing to do; it’s just that your cousin is too arrogant. The young lady who was beaten didn’t do anything wrong, yet she was treated like this.”
Zang Ya nodded, noncommittal. If he hadn’t thought of Song Lin and his kindness to send interesting over, he wouldn’t have taken action. After all, it was none of his business.
