My Enigmatic Life

Volume Four, Chapter One Point Five: Childhood Bonds

It's a little past noon, and I'm here at Sunni's. I'm staying for dinner, but Sunni wanted me to come extra early so we can have sometime to ourselves, which I definitely don't mind. We have a lot to catch up on, after all.

"It's your move, Govvy."

"Yeah, I know."

Right now we're playing an old-fashioned game of Bridge. This does take me back, to our younger days. Damn, I sound like an old man.

"This is just like the old days. I still don't have any idea what I'm doing.", I say.

Sunni giggles politely at my ineptitude.

"I could teach you, you know."

"I'll pass. Last time you tried to teach me something, Mr.Lowe's greenhouse almost burnt to the ground."

"Hey! That was ten years ago...I'm much better at magic now!"

Sunni frowns pitifully at me. So, she still gets all pouty when I bring that up, eh?

"I'm only poking fun, I'm sure you're almost as good as Uncle Halman now."

Sunni is still pouting a bit, but she shakes her head in disagreement.

"No, not quite. I'm still a ways away from catching up to Papa, and I'm even further away from my one of my goals."

I admire her, she has such a lofty goal, and yet here I am just basically floating along. The least I can do is be as supportive as I can.

"Well, just remember that I'll be around to fetch as many pails of water you need."

"I have no doubt of that.", Sunni says proudly, "After all, my other goal is marrying you and having four children, two boys and two girls."

And then there's this far more mudane, down to earth one. Of course, I'm also supportive of this one. Sunni suddenly leans in extra close and whispers seductively to me.

"Why don't we practice our kiss at the altar, Govvy?"

"Shouldn't we be doing the vows first?", I grin.

Slowly and purposefully, our lips meet. We begin to embrace each other as the mood slowly starts to buil-

*KNOCK-KNOCK*

"YEEEE!"

"WHA-?!"

Sunni and I break apart with a yelp. Blimey, talk about ruining the atmosphere.

"Come in.."

Sunni is obviously a bit bitter right now, but my mood actually brightens.

"Mrs.Lowe!"

"It really is you Govvy!"

Mrs. Lowe is The Renford Family chef, she's been apart of the staff for years, so she's practically family. She's a short, stout woman with a warm, molly-coddling personality.

"It's good to see you again Mrs.Lowe, how are you?", I smile at her.

"I'm wonderful, my dear. But my! You've grown so tall, haven't you? But you're as thin as ever, my dear, both you and Arthur simply never seem to gain any weight! Arianne, dear, why didn't you tell me that he's still so lanky? Come along, Govvy. These sandwiches I brought simply won't at all. We have to get some more meat on your bones. You too, Arianne, don't get left behind now."

Mrs.Lowe is as fussy as usual. Sunni and I can't help but be dragged along by her.
