chapter 81 - Divine Cat Mii-chan Acts as a Mediator Between Humans at Brocken Mountain
The Demon King’s Arrival. So, what now?
Chapter 81: Divine Cat Mii-chan Acts as a Mediator Between Humans at Brocken Mountain
The next morning, after completing preparations for departure, we set off. No one spoke a word.
Even Perro, who usually chatters away incessantly, was unusually quiet. Though, he did make sure to eat a hearty breakfast.
Sumire, who had been rather subdued since last night, was now running alongside us, calm and composed.
Could it be that last night’s events were weighing heavily on everyone’s minds?
Nevertheless, we reached the foot of Brocken Mountain by mid-morning, had lunch, and then, under Sera’s guidance, entered the mountain. Martin and Elena were startled when Sera shifted back into her black panther form.
By late afternoon, we arrived at the location where King Fang and his group were staying.
“Oh, Lady Mii. Welcome, we’ve been expecting you.”
“You’re here today because of the Demon King, aren’t you?”
Rodem’s words hinted at something ominous.
“I’d like to discuss that matter as well, but I’ve actually come today with a request. It’s also related to the mediation between humans that King Fang asked me to handle.”
“Oh, is that so? Feel free to ask for anything.”
“Then, may I call them over here?”
This area is spacious enough, so there shouldn’t be a problem.
“Ah, so you’ve got them waiting somewhere? Go ahead and call them in immediately.”
So, I signaled to the sky using a hand mirror, reflecting the light upward. After a short while, a wyvern began descending from above.
However, this led to a huge miscalculation… The white wolf tribe, the black panther tribe, and even the nearby werecats all panicked, scattering in every direction. Some were so terrified that they collapsed and couldn’t move. Sera and Lu-kun tried to reassure everyone, but it didn’t seem to have much effect.
Despite the chaos, King Fang and Rodem stood their ground, calmly watching as the wyvern descended.
“Is that the representative of the humans?”
“They are envoys from the Grand Duchy of Hildenburg, which governs the lands south of Brocken Mountain.”
“Hmm. From the southern lands, then.”
“Lord Nero, can they be trusted?”
“Rodem, your concern is valid, but this country is ruled by the father of the Queen of the Lumielle Kingdom, with whom we are on friendly terms. I don’t think they mean us any harm.”
“Mii~”
Mii-chan reassured them with a comforting look, as Martin and Elena disembarked from the wyvern.
“Here we have King Fang, leader of the white wolf tribe, and Rodem, leader of the black panther tribe.”
Martin and Elena knelt on one knee in greeting.
“It is an honor to meet you. I am Martin, vice-captain of the wyvern squadron of the Grand Duchy of Hildenburg.”
“My name is Elena. I’ve come as an envoy on behalf of our lord to negotiate with the master of Brocken Mountain.”
I don’t know the details of the negotiations, so I plan to leave the rest to them.
I then headed to the cave with Mii-chan and Perro, where the injured were being treated. It seems some of them still haven’t fully recovered. The two bottles of mineral water I gave them last time were already empty. I poured more mineral water into a dish and offered it to those who hadn’t fully healed. This should take care of the issue.
When I stepped outside, I saw Lu-kun playing with the white wolf tribe’s children. Although we were only apart for a short time, it must have felt like a great adventure for Lu-kun, and he was probably happy to reunite with his friends. Mii-chan soon joined them, rushing into the group. Since everyone is white, it’s hard to tell where Mii-chan is among them.
“Very well. You may use the southern peak.”
“Now that the Granbear is gone, the area is lawless, but with a wyvern present, it should regain some semblance of order.”
“What compensation should we provide?”
“We require none. However, convey to your leader that we have no intention of waging war against the humans.”
“Understood.”
It seems the negotiations have concluded. I placed a barrel of ale in front of King Fang and Rodem, naturally well-chilled. I then poured it into a dish and set it before them.
“Lord Nero, we have been waiting!”
“Human-made alcohol is quite the delicacy!”
I handed Martin a cup of ale as well. It seems Elena doesn’t drink, so I made her a frozen fruit juice instead.
“For peace and coexistence.”
“For peace and coexistence,” everyone echoed.
“Mii!”
Ah, nothing like a refreshing frozen drink! As for Mii-chan, she’s enjoying some mineral water.
We started a fire, and Mii-chan brought out some fish we bought at the market. I skewered the fish on wooden sticks, lightly salted them, and began grilling. The aroma quickly drew the white wolf and black panther children over. While waiting for the fish to cook, I enjoyed petting the little ones to my heart’s content. At some point, Elena had joined in the fun too.
I shared the cooked fish with the children, and the adults quickly devoured the bones and innards. Don’t worry, there’s plenty more, so no need to fight over it.
As the fish were grilling, I decided to ask King Fang about yesterday’s events.
“Was the strange presence we felt yesterday that of the Demon Lord?”
“I sensed it to the northwest of here. There’s no doubt.”
“And we just finished dealing with the Granbear…”
“I suspect that Demon Lord might be a goblin.”
“Lord Nero, do you know something about this?”
At that point, I explained the situation so far.
“There’s no doubt about it.”
“Goblins are troublesome. They’re highly aggressive and breed even faster than orcs, making them more problematic.”
“The most troublesome thing is that goblins don’t just attack humans—they also go after other monsters and Demon Lords, expanding their influence.”
I see, that’s how things become so chaotic, leading to a great war.
“The south might be safe, but the north will be in turmoil, especially with the appearance of an Orc Demon Lord.”
“Oh? So you’re aware of the orcs as well, Lord Fang?”
“Has your country noticed too? There have been rumors of orcs causing trouble for some time. A few months ago, I sensed the presence of an Orc King. That’s probably why the Granbear was so anxious. Even I considered becoming a Demon Lord myself…”
So, that’s the backstory. But is it really worth it to go to such lengths just to become a Demon Lord?
“Originally, before the Grand Duchy of Hildenburg was established, this Brocken Mountain and the two southern Demon Lord territories were ruled by a single Demon Lord. When that Demon Lord was defeated, the territories were divided, and new Demon Lords emerged in the southern territories. As descendants of someone who prided themselves as the right hand of the Demon Lord, they must have felt a deep sense of frustration. It’s a troublesome situation for us, though.”
“But isn’t the fact that an Orc King has already emerged a serious problem?”
Elena turned to Martin, voicing her concern.
“They probably don’t want it to be known. If word spreads, other nations might intervene.”
“But if the damage spreads, it won’t just affect that country—it will spill over into others as well.”
“Which is why they must have something planned, whether it’s a secret strategy or a desperate gamble.”
Is there really no place in this world that’s truly safe? It would be nice to live peacefully without all this conflict, right, Mii-chan?
“Mii~”
