Chapter 63: Chapter 63: The Grand Wizard of the Black Tower
After breaking through the invisible barrier, Richard's body underwent an astonishing transformation.
A tingling sensation spread throughout his body, as if every cell was trembling. Simultaneously, his magic started to deplete, absorbed by his cells as nourishment for evolution.
The first change occurred in his skin; a layer of keratin formed visibly on the surface. With this protection, Richard noticed a marked decrease in his body heat loss.
But the changes weren't limited to the surface; every cell in Richard's body began to transform during this evolution. His cells produced more heat, and his muscles and fat restructured to better withstand the cold.
Changes that would typically take thousands of years occurred within minutes, accelerated by the potion.
When it was over, Richard suddenly vomited a pool of black blood.
These were the waste products from cellular turnover.
"Is this... the beginning?"
He wiped his mouth, realizing that despite the ongoing freezing process, he no longer felt cold.
As the session ended, Richard exited the chamber and retrieved a testing crystal ball from his magic pouch.

"Nearly two points in physique boost. This year's training wasn't in vain."
The Body of Adaptation extracts potential from the body, a side effect that, in Richard's case, proved most beneficial.
After cleaning the freezing chamber, Richard injected another dose of adaptation potion.
The earlier evolution had consumed his previous dose; he needed to replenish it.
Seated on the electric chair, Richard took a deep breath and activated the switch.
This time, his body responded differently. The electricity coursing through him brought not pain, but a tingling sensation.
His body was beginning to adapt to the electric shocks.
As mentioned before, the life core is like a rusty machine, with the adaptation potion as its lubricant and external stimuli as its energy source. Now that the machine was moving, the rust began to wear away, speeding up its operation.
After a cycle, Richard emerged from the recovery fluid, ready to report his progress to Jolord.
Jolord had shown great interest in his progress. Since Richard's initial inquiry about the lack of results, Jolord had checked in regularly, offering encouragement and support.
As someone who had gone through it, Jolord understood the early struggles of the Body of Adaptation—enduring daily torment with little visible result.
The last mile is always the hardest.
Such a seemingly hopeless journey easily led to abandonment.
At the laboratory, Jolord was instructing Chucks on dissecting an alien creature.
"This gland is its digestive gland. Digestive juices enter its digestive chamber through this duct, dissolving food into nutrient soup..."
Seeing Richard enter, Jolord paused his lecture.
"Richard, you're just in time. I have news for you."
"What is it, teacher?" Richard found a seat next to Chucks.
"Good news. The principal returned early. You'll enter the principal's secret realm this afternoon."
"Really?" Richard was shocked, then overjoyed. "I thought the principal wouldn't return for another year."
Jolord set his scalpel aside, conjuring a ball of water to wash his hands.
"Who knows? That's what Ereks said. You seemed cheerful when you came in. Do you have good news for me?" Jolord asked with a smile.
Richard grinned sheepishly. "I came to tell you that my Body of Adaptation is showing results."
He extended his arm, and Jolord immediately noticed the changes.
"Good, good. I'm glad to hear it's working," Jolord said, relieved. "After a year without results, I feared you'd give up..."
He glanced sharply at Chucks, who was trying to retreat unnoticed.
"Chucks, do you think I can't see you if you hide? If you had Richard's perseverance, you'd have qualified for the secret realm exploration!"
Chucks smiled wryly. The Body of Adaptation was brutal. He had lasted three months, which was remarkable on its own.
But he couldn't compare to the two prodigies beside him.
Senior sister Anna had lasted six months, and his junior brother Richard had persisted for a whole year without giving up.
They were monsters.
...
That afternoon, Richard arrived early at the lab to accompany Jolord to the upper levels of the Central Black Tower.
The tower was tall, with the first fifty floors dedicated to teaching, floors fifty-one to three hundred for wizards, and the upper floors housing the principal, the Grand Wizard of the Black Tower. Even wizards couldn't enter freely, with Ereks as the sole exception.
On the three-hundredth floor, all students granted exploration rights were gathered by their mentors. Two students who originally lacked mentors were quickly taken in by wizards after the exam.
"Everyone's here," Ereks noted, checking his pocket watch. "Follow me upstairs."
To Richard's surprise, they ascended to the three-hundred-first floor via stairs.
"Is there an anti-flight barrier?"
Richard's question was soon answered. As they entered the three-hundred-first floor, the environment changed dramatically.
Suddenly, Richard sensed the ambient magic density increase by several magnitudes. He even doubted his senses.
But looking at the other students, he saw they were equally astonished.
"The area above the three-hundredth floor of the Central Black Tower is fused with secret realm fragments by the principal, making it vastly superior in space and magic density," Ereks explained without turning around.
The students withdrew their amazed gazes, following their mentors quietly.
They reached a door, and Ereks produced an oddly shaped key to unlock it. As the door opened, Richard and the other students nearly fainted.
An indescribable fear seeped from beyond the door. Just a hint of it made Richard's cells tremble, and his life core began operating autonomously without the aid of potions.
Richard's vision blurred as his body frantically sought ways to survive.
"Principal, these youngsters can't handle your life radiation," Ereks remarked wryly.
"Haha, but this time, there are some promising ones. Look at the one Jolord brought."
A figure approached Richard.
It was a middle-aged man, strikingly handsome, with unkempt hair and beard that gave him a rebellious charm.
"Jolord, your Body of Adaptation is impressive."
The man placed a hand on Richard's head, channeling magic into his body to aid his evolution.
Within minutes, Richard's body stabilized.
As clarity returned to his vision, he saw the unfamiliar middle-aged man before him, watching with interest.
"Who are you...?"
The man smiled.
"Youngster, I am your principal, the Grand Wizard of the Black Tower."
