On August 24, 2024, the anniversary of the patenting of the waffle iron, the destruction of Pompeii, and one of the sackings of Rome, Meghan wakes up to find herself transformed into a dragon. Actually, she's always known that she was a dragon, but stuck in a human body. Or, at least, that's what she told herself and everyone else when she was 9 years old, back in the 80s. But now, at 50 years old, her old childhood dream has suddenly, and without warning, become true. She's hit dragon puberty, and her neighbor Rhoda thinks maybe she shed her old skin and ate it in her sleep. Or something like that. And the thing about it is that everyone else seems to be taking her transformation for granted as well. Like it was inevitable or something. Still, the whole thing is so wild and bizarre and such a huge change for everyone that her simultaneous gender transition is a second thought, hardly even commented on. Maybe it's because of where she lives, in the Pacific Northwest on the I5 corridor, where a lot of people are just really cool about everyone else's identities. Well, almost everyone else's. Well, some people. There are just a couple of problems. She's not the only dragon to come out of the closet on that day. Maybe 1 in 200,000 people on the entire planet has turned out to be a dragon. And draconic instincts are pretty strong and disruptive. They're territorial. And, of course, there are whole groups of people around the globe who, while somehow not surprised by this turn of events, certainly object to them.
